Upgrading GPU, overdue for CPU upgrade?

I am looking at upgrading my GTX 560 ti to a GTX 760 but I am worried that my i7-920 is going to be choking my system.

My motherboard is an EVGA X58, with socket 1366. So the best I can upgrade to is an i7-980.

So is an upgrade necessary or is the i7-920 still keeping up with today's gaming standards?

People are still rocking in their C2Q chips.. Playing games in their higher settings, why should be a i7 920 worried about?.. But if you want to be fully secured, overclock that thing to lets say 3.6GHZ and you will be perfect to any game..
 
I wouldn't call playing Rome 2 TW on C2D rocking. Yes it's playable kinda.

Op, your i7 920 is still an excellent gaming processor, especially if it is overclocked. It should have no issues with a gtx 760.

If you were considering upgrading the CPU as well as a new video card then I suggest you put that money to good use and get a second GTX760 and SLI both video cards. If and when the 920 gets too far out of date and you do upgrade it then the twin video cards will still be enough to keep you going on your new rig.

A friend of mine has that CPU and three water cooled GTX480's, his 3Dmark is 10% faster than my stock I7-3820 with two GTX660TI's in SLI.

i7 920 is still a champ, particularly as you're not considering a really high powered GPU.

^totally agree... 920 have still plenty of power to feed a 780.. Specially high oc'd.
 
I've been rocking the C2Q 9550 for the past 5 years no problems on the 660. CPU may or may not be holding me back but I'm not noticing anything at 1080p that's impeding my gaming experience. Only OC'ed it by 1Ghz a year ago just to give me that buffer and TBH I'm having no complaints. Although I'm sure if you're trying to play the latest and greatest, super maxed settings, super maxed resolution, etc. Then you will start to see CPU coming more into affect.

i7 920 is still a great CPU, leaps and bounds ahead of my lowly C2Q 9550.
 
You guys rock! Looks like I will OC the 920, pretty surprised I haven't done that yet. I will consider going with two GTX760s (I got way too excited typing that). Will probably upgrade RAM up from 6GB as well.
 
Yeah if you could find a game that would choke your 920 I would literally eat a turd and post a video of it right here on [H].
