So I bought the g3258 in hopes of waiting for broadwell, mainly for the soldered ihs, and I was wondering If I should just upgrade to a xeon, http://ark.intel.com/products/80910/Intel-Xeon-Processor-E3-1231-v3-8M-Cache-3_40-GHz , since I learned that they had a soldered IHS. Is this true? I know I'm forgoing overclocking for this, but to me it seems like the locked i7 at lower price seems to me gnawing on the cheapass inside of me. If the xeon isn't soldered I'll still wait for broadwell to be released.

On a side note how will the broadwell iGPU cache aid in cpu performance? I read that it functions as a fake L4 cache when the iGPU is disabled so I was wondering how this will affect multi-tasking.
 
If you aren't running an unlocked processor, then the IHS being soldered means nil.
 
I wouldn't worry about having a soldered IHS if your not overclocking. Haswell runs cool without it at stock speeds.
 
I thought they were to allow for more effective cooling in compact environments, such as 1U or 2U servers. Can't find the article, though.

Don't those rack-mounted chassis' always have insanely high RPM fans to compensate for the cramped configuration? I couldn't imagine solder vs TIM under the IHS mattering much in that regard, but I could be wrong.

It will do some benefit but not much. Those high RPM fans are high RPM because they are much smaller and working with a cramped HS that usually has no heat pipes so it has to make up for it by using a small, loud ass fan.
