upgrading from evga 260. help please

so today i got accepted for the New egg preferred account. i can do a No interest for 12 months if i spend over $500. so i did upgrades to my comp back in october. got everything new except PSU and Graphics card. I am Running a EVGA Nvidia Geforce GTX 260 At the moment. i wanna get something a bit newer but not as new as the 580's. i was thinking of getting 2 of these and running them in SLI.

what do you all think? and is SLI worth it? or should i just get 1 580?

my computer specs are

gigabyte mobo (x58 udr3)
intel core i7 930
6gb of corsair dominator ddr3 tripple channel memory
corsair H70 Processor cooler
corsair Obsidian 800d case
Ultra x3 1000w PSU.
32" Sony Bravia TV as monitor

That's a lot of money to pay for a GTX460. It may be overclocked but at 810mhz it's not going to be much faster than a $180 HD6850 (and you can get them for as low as $155 after MIR), and it won't be as fast as a $225 HD6870 (as low as $200 after MIR). Also, SLI doesn't scale quite as well crossfire these days, so two HD6850s would in fact be just as fast as two of the Talon cards. Also bear in mind the efficiency of axial coolers like the Talon is greatly compromised in an SLI setup. Rear-exhausting cards like the HD6870, and to a lesser extent the better HD6850s, work better in crossfire.
It's $455 for two of those Hawks and Just cause 2, or $450 ($410 after MIR) for two HD6870s which will be 10% faster than the Hawks if not more, use about 100W less power total, and not really be any hotter or noisier. 400W of heat is a lot to dump into a case as well.
 
thank you for your input. i have had bad experences with Radeon cards and i am a die hard nvidia fan. but the bad experences i have had with radeon was way back in the day with cards that are nothing like they are today.
 
Both manufacturers have had their upsides and downsides. If you had a Geforce FX you'd probably be a Radeon fan for life. If you had a Radeon HD2900 you'd probably be a Geforce fan for life. With bad experiences so many years ago I'd write them off and simply go with what is the better buy, which right now, is basically all the Radeons.
 
So you are specifically wanting your cost to be $500 or more?

Using your TV as a monitor I'd say you'd be fine with 1 570 or 1 6950 and saving your money.

If you must do SLI of CFX then do 2 560 or 2 6870.
 
If your sound card is PCI, then no, unless you have a case with spare room underneath and use the bottom slot at 8x speed [be advised this will make your front I/O connectors inaccessible while the second card is installed].
If it's PCIe 1x, then yes you can SLI fine.

Yes a GTX 580 is worth it. Single card, without multiple GPU headaches. However it's expensive. Your best bet for top single performance without breaking the bank, is the GTX 570 or HD 6970 (which perform similarly, you can easily check this with the multitude of reviews out there).

Speaking for myself, I prefer to stay away from multiple GPU setups. They're a pain because they are way to dependent on driver updates (and game profiles) to work properly, but if you really must, check out the GTX 560 in SLI or HD 6950 1 GB in Crossfire. Both should yield even greater performance than a single GTX 580, for about the same (or less) money.
 
I have that talon attack card. I can tell you the cooling solution is very nice, so if you are into overclocking you wont have to invest in aftermarket cooling. To compare if you bought a card with more standard clocks for $50 less but it got too hot when overclocked, so you invested $50 in aftermarket cooling....you see my point there. Also that particular card comes with somewhat rare Hynix memory rated at 1250Mhz (5000 effective) that is underclocked to 975Mhz so it has headroom. Also most of those with some voltage bump will do 900 to 1000 core.

At any rate, you have choices, that particular card is nice, I just wanted to chime in because everyone tends to pass off the Talon Attack as just another factory overclocked card that can be achieved with a vanilla version for $50 less and its just not the case.

Length isn't what he's talking about. Its width. And yes, this talon attack card for instance, is made so there's barely an eighth of an inch between the face of the cooler fans and the back side of a sound card. It actually only affects temps a few degrees, not as big as I thought, but I ended up pulling my sound card to allow it to breathe cause I run it pretty hard.

If I had the chance to snag a EVGA GTX 570; I would have & been done with it all now. If you can grab two of them, go for it & enjoy the setup for years to come. This is coming from a Nvidia (EVGA) fan that just Bought a price-matched XFX HD 6950 2GB from Frys yesterday.

I am curious though, what is the max resolution the TV can broadcast? Is it 1920 x 1080/1200?

Since you aren't going higher on Resolution, I would just grab a single GTX 570/580 & game the hell out of it. SLI is a total waste; even stated by KYLE Owner of this site unless A) playing at a higher resolution than 1920 x 1080/1200 which means 27-30'' inch monitor displays B) Multiple Displays C) Want to brag that you wasted $300+ dollars

I would get the EVGA GTX 570/580; & never look back. Enjoy

ok. thank you all for your advice. i am gonna go with the 1 gtx 570. next question is by who? EVGA , MSI, .. the MSI cooler looks like it would keep it cooler. any input?
 
im running 3900x1200 with a single 5870 2g. I don't think YOU need to SLI/Xfire if I dont need it (yet)
 
The MSI Twin Froze II cooler is really top end, has four copper heatpipes.....not sure which version is on the 570

Some will claim EVGA for lifetime warranty, if you will keep the card over 3 years then it might be worth it. 3yrs was long enough for me.
