I'm looking for a 23-24" upgrade path from my current NEC 20WMGX2 without sacrificing image quality and maintaining the glossy screen finish.

I've read some of the posts in the current HP and Dell model threads and am not sure if either of these would be an "upgrade" to what I've regarded as pretty much the perfect monitor. I haven't really kept up with display technology for the past couple of year, so I could still be living in the past with regards to the quality of LCD monitors, and maybe my current LCD isn't quite as good as I think it is.

Does anyone have any direct experience upgrading from the 20WMGX2 and advice on which current monitor would provide the same quality with a higher screen size?

Price isn't the primary deciding factor, but something that's not going to totally break the bank ($1,000+) would be preferred.

I went from the NEC to Dell 30 incher.

There are many short comings of all LCD monitors, but in my experience the NEC did a lot of things well. It just did not have the size.

So I bought the 3007HC and it crushed the NEC in size, but some of the other attributes were lacking. Most notably, black levels.

Once you use a 30 inch monitor with 2560x1600, there is no going back. I kept my NEC in box with me, just in case, but I never wanted to use it again.

You can find several IPS lcds in that size but none of them will be glossy. I also own the 20WMGX2 and also want to upgrade. The closest thing to what you're looking for would be the Apple Cinema 24 inch. But that lcd has a lot of shortcomings in the input department, plus no osd.

Unfortunately, if you want to stick with ips, it's either matte or nothing.

Is the Apple Cinema compatible with the 58XX series of video cards (they have display port outputs)?

If so then I'd like to try a 24" LED-backlit Apple Cinema display.

I'm also on the 20wmgx^2 - good LCD - the current substitute is the Dell e-ips 2209 I'd say, but same resolution.

Same here...really wish NEC would make a direct successor from this to 30" LoL

20wmgx2 has been great to me, but I'm really wanting to move to 2560x1600

I've been considering the LG W3000H-Bn and the 3007WFP-HC from Dell... (same panel I've heard?)

If you have been considering the Dell, just get it already. I mean, if you are considering it, you have the money. You will not regret it.

Hard to find a good upgrade from GX2 cause none of them have glossy screens. And the ones that do are TN.

The Dell U2410 might be a winner in the 24" IPS market, but it's a bit early to say with people getting the first ones just this week. Searching for a glossy panel IPS is pretty much a futile quest now, though. The older Apple Cinema Display was good but it needs that $99 adapter available only from Apple to work with DVI.

i dont think there is such an adapter available, mayne you are thinking of mini-DP -> DVI, but that's not what's needed, you need the opposite which does not exist.
The only way is with displayport GPU and displayport->mini-DP adapter which is also cheaper.

But stil there are many negatives....first of all the price which is too much, and then the 1 year warranty which is a joke (at least in Europe) especially considering the price....not to mention that you can get a GPU with displayport and use this display with a PC, but stil you can do nothing about xbox360 or PS3 to connect them to it...

I went from a 20WMGX2 to the LP2475w, and have never looked back. Just get one from Amazon so you can return/exchange it if you need to.

Is the HP LP2475W still worth getting over the Dell U2410?

The jury is still out on the Dell, but initial results seem good. They seem to have the same issue in a small cross section of users, where the left side of the panel has a green tint and a red tint on the right. My thinking is it probably has something to do with whatever polarizer is bieng used, or the AG coating bieng used, or a combination of the two.

The Dell seems to have a working sRGB mode, but at the cost of input lag and dithering of the grey scale. I cannot confirm or deny these reports as I do not own one.

The HP's sRGB mode is like most other models, and unusable.

The other major difference is the Dell has touch sensative OSD controls, while the HP has standard buttons. The Dell has a card reader I believe, while HP does not.

The HP has some known issues with older firmware and the power LED, which you probably would not have to worry about now.

The Dell I think has more OSD options, but I'm not sure about that yet. I'm waiting for the TFT Central review which should tell tell us a lot more.

After reading the TFT Central review of the U2410, I would say the LP2475w is the better choice. They may have just gotten a bed unit with poor black level and backlight bleed, but if not the LP2475w is much better in those aspects alone and equal in other image related qualities.

Apple DVI to ADC Adapter $99

It's not a great solution, but your available solutions for glossy monitors are mighty slim pickings these days.

That's not for the 24" Apple Cinema Display, it for older ACDs with the Apple Display Connection, look at the list. the 24" ACD uses a mini-Displayport connection.

"Introducing the Apple DVI to ADC adapter, which allows you to connect any Apple flat-panel display featuring an Apple Display Connector (ADC) to a computer with a DVI port.
"

There is no DVI to mini-Displyport adapter, as it is a different signal format and would require processing of some sort. There are mini-DP to DVI adapters becasue mini-DP does output a DVI compatable signal, they are for the Macbooks with miniDP output, so you can connect them to a DVI monitor.

Oh, I see, I didn't realize the 24" was different from the older ones. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

But there is a DVI -> mini-DP adapter! Just came across it when researching something else:

Unfortunately it's $180. Ouch.

damn I wanna move up to from my 20WMGX2 but the picture on this is amazing and the blacks superb:D

Yep. I have a 20WMGX2 sitting next to an 2490WUXi. Neither has been professionally calibrated, but the 20WMGX2 does have visibly better black levels and possibly even a more pleasing color rendition. This doesn't mean that the 2490WUXi is bad -- it isn't! -- but it does reinforce how great the 20WMGX2 is (was), with the obvious exception of visible glare due to the glossy screen.

I upgraded from my NEC 20WMGX2 to a Dell 2408WFP. Currently, the 20WMGX2 is in my attic until I get more desk space. I am happy with the 2408WFP and do not notice any input lag (Rev 02). The size is great, and I mainly went with the Dell because of the Zero Dead Pixel Guarantee.

I exchanged SIX 20WMGX2's before finding one I was happy with. At one point, I ordered three from Sams Club (order was close to $2000), opened one, wasnt happy with it, opened the second, more dead pixels, opened the third, finally had a good one. Returned the other two.

I'm going to try and upgrade to the hp lp3065 (a good deal from a friend $850 for a sealed new one) so at that price I think it's worth a shot....

...hopefully I don't have to bring the 20wmgx2 back out (It's already got about 10,000 hours or so not sure how much longer I can count on it).

I think that the hours counted on the timer include standby time as well?
