My gtx 760 is starting to struggle with current games (witcher 3, xcom 2, the division beta),
would an R9 380x 4GB be much of an upgrade for 1080p gaming? Other specs are an i5 4670k and 16 GB of RAM.

It would definitely be a step up, but a big enough step to merit buying a new card? In my opinion, it depends on what you expect. The 380x will run modern games at 1080p, but at high settings, not ultra, and with only a little AA. And thats using the idea of 40+FPS being 'enough'

If this is fine, then you're looking at a great experience.

You may be able to OC to get those extra frames, but I'm not sure how well the 380X cards OC, someone will have to fill me in on that.

Get a 970.

This. The 760 isn't much slower than a GTX 960, and the 380X is only 20% faster than the 960.

Either wait for this year's cards from AMD and Nvidia, or get the 970/390. Both are back down to $300 before rebate.

As defaultluser said, I'd go with a 970/390 if you want an upgrade now. You'll see an improvement for sure. You can also look at snagging one used for a bit cheaper.

Heck if you really want to splurge you can get a 980 too.

should allow you to max out most settings at 1080p...that card is very close to 7970 in performance and 200 or under is a decent price.....over that and the other cards start to look more appealing

The R9 380x is actually a little bit faster than a GTX 770 which is a pretty good performance gap from a GTX 760 if you get a good deal on it. If he can go for a GTX 970 even though its a little pricier I would recommend that more, you can pick one up for a really good price in mint conditions if you look for it.

Yeah, This review puts the (stock clocked) 380X 45% faster than the GTX 760, which is a little faster than I thought it was.

That said, even at $220 that's a lot of money to be dropping for just 45% performance improvement. That's a performance increase/dollar of just .20

You can get 100% performance improvement for only $300 (R9 390, compare to 290x in benchmarks). This is way higher performance increase per dollar of .33!

You can also get 120% performance increase from $380 (R9 390X), which is the slightly lower performance/dollar advantage as the 390.

So really the 380X has no legs to stand on, coming from a decent midrange card like the 760.

I still think the 390/GTX 970 is the best value upgrade. If he were upgrading from a 660 or 750 Ti, it would be different!

*agrees /w defaultuser

I only upgrade when I'm guaranteed at least a 100% performance increase

(went from a 6950 2GB to a 960 4GB myself etc.)

Paying full price of course its not convenient thats why I mentioned if you can get a good deal on it. I recently got a 380x for alot less than $220 and I am sure you can find more like that if you look around as well as a GTX 970 in a really good price range way under the price of a new R9 390.

Which doesn't change the value equation one bit!

If you can get $30 off of either card (The 380X, AND the GTX 970), the performance/dollar is still much more in favor of the 390/970.

45% / 190 (380X DEAL) = 0.24
100% / 270 (GTX 970 DEAL) = 0.37

If you are going to present the "mystical" deal without a link, then you have to accept that deals happen on all cards. So the value equation scales the same.

But even if you found a fantastic deal on JUST the 380X, and compared it to the retail priced 390/970, you'd have to GET THE PRICE DOWN TO $130 to get the same performance increase per dollar. I seriously doubt you got anywhere near that number.

390 or 970. Not much of an upgrade if you get something smaller, especially not the 380x at it's pricepoint

I'm more or less in the same boat as you except I'm upgrading from a r9 270x. The 270x and the 760 are pretty darn close as far as performance goes. I definitely would not "upgrade" to a 380x or a 960. I'm only considering the GTX 970 if I can find one in the $275 range. Even then I'm a little worried I'm shooting myself in the foot with only a 4GB card with new cards right around the corner.

At 1080p even with VSR...4GB of ram is No Problem.....heck 3GB on my current card has never been vram limited as far as i can tell. They only time its really ever an issue is multi card setups. Show me one review where a single card at exactly the same clocks (that has 4gb or more vram) performs better with additional ram? I have never seen it

You're in the dreaded "should I buy a 970 or 390" category now. There is enough info out there about the two cards so I won't dive into that.

Are used 290x's hard to find now? That's usually the common recommendation for this bracket these days... supposedly, with overclocking, 390 performance can be had at 960 prices but people have recently stopped talking about it.

Honestly,
I haven't seen any around for a price I would consider. If you do find one let me know.

Personally not a fan of the 390, I would consider maybe the new nano.?.? LOL JK of course, I would stick with the 290 or grab a 295

haha If the nano was like...$350 - $400 maybe. It's a pretty neat card but not at the ~$500 it's at now.

Not sure this makes sense. A 390 is a 290 upgraded so it isn't a step back. It also performs at 290X level most of the time and with 8Gb Vram. I mean do what you will but that just doesn't seem rational.

Correct, except usually you can grab a 290x or 2 290x for less than a 390. In that way it would be better, but if money is no issue then grab the newer card. I personally love the 295, just think it's the coolest card ever lol I can't seem to find those cheap though.

Yeah prob wont until a FURYX2 comes out. Price you are right. I got my R9-290 for $260 over a year ago and regret not one part.

I was runnin quad 290x for a little while only to realize 2 were perfect lol. I love them

I currently have a 980ti btw and we'll it is nice but for the price I think AMD could have done a better job
