I'm considering upgrading my video card and I'm not sure which one to pick.

I was thinking of getting an 8800GT because they've dropped in price over the past 3 months or so, but so has the 9800GTX. I'd like something to future proof myself for at least the next 2 years, if not longer.

Mainly, I'm just looking for the best "bang for your buck" kind of card that will last me a while and won't cost me $500. I know the new GTX 260 and 280 are coming out this month, but I don't plan on spending that much and I don't think I'll need something that powerful, if they live up to the hype that is.

Just looking for something that's around $200 or less, but I'm willing to go to $300 if it's better than most.

It'll be going into the rig in my sig.

Any help is appreciated.

Get the 4870 that comes out in like 2 weeks or so. Should be between $200-$300 and should have really good performance for the money.

Im basically in the same boat this guy is in... so I would love to hear some suggestions as well

Wait for the:

Radeon 4850 or 4870

Or the nvidia GTX 280 or 260.

Both should be out in June if not July. Gonna kick the crap out of everything that's out right now.

I don't plan on shelling out $500 or more just for a video card when it will obviously drop in price in 6 months. I don't need to play every game on super high settings either and I don't play tons of games. Just saying.

The only reason I see to wait is to see if current video card prices drop. I basically just want a decent upgrade that won't break the bank. I said in my first post that I don't want to go over $300, so that's why I was considering an 8800GT or a 9800GTX at most.

I'll probably just go with the 8800GT, unless the 9800GTX would be a better investment. I'm not getting the GTX 260 or 280 because I believe they will be overkill for any game that's out right now.

Any suggestions for a decent card will be appreciated.

If you don't want to go ATI i'd still suggest waiting for them to come out. If ATI is offereing a card with a 25% boost in performance over an 8800GT at the same price as the GT you can bet that the cost of the 8800GT will go down.

Any particular reason you picked right now to upgrade?
