I have a dell dimension 4550 2G P4, 256Mb, 400 Mh bus clock, geforce mx 420. I'm looking to make it into a strictly gaming computer that I can hook up to my tv and play. I was thinking of getting 1 gig of ram and the geforce 7900gt xxx graphics card. From reading around it seems that some people say that I have limits on what i can put on a dell. So my question is will an upgrade of ram and a card be enough to make it a kick azz gaming comp or will i need to upgrade other components. thank you

First off, that is an AGP slot. You can't use a 7900 GT in it... 2nd, it doesn't have a good enough power supply. You will also need to increase your RAM & all taht good stuff. If I were you, I would try to sell everything that you have and rebuild a new system. Even if it's a Sempron 3100+Epox mobo for 89 bucks, it will be more powerful than yours. Seriously... then you can pick up a 6600 GT. Or you can spend a few extra bucks more to get a s939 Opteron 144 & DFI ULtra mobo and a 7600 GT. w00t!

I wouldn't try to upgrade that. Sell it, build a new system from scratch

Thats what I just said. :(

he is reinfocing your statement :p

yeh do what noobtech said...the worst thing about dell is in the future their comps dont really leave an upgrade path (talking about their mid end and lower pcs)

if you plan on playing on regular tv, just buy a 9800 pro used or something, it should be fine at 640x480 for a while. You might want to buy another 512 for cheap to go with it too.

Thats your best bet IMO if you want to upgrade on the cheap, otherwise you should do what the above posters suggested.

Bingo. :)

thats what i figured. Then I'm gonna need a little help. I've been out of the comp loop for a few years. I will have about $1,000 to spend(including monitor, keyboard, etc) I can build it but i don't know whats good anymore. Can you give me some help on what to put in it to make it a kick azz gaming computer or if theres a complete package you recommend that would help me. thanks
