upgrading cpu

That system has a 845GE chipset, so Prescott support is iffy (see below for why).

You're limited to 400MHz/533MHz FSB processors since the chipset doesn't support 800MHz FSB. It's not guaranteed that Prescotts will run on that system, and they probably won't.

That emachines motherboard (made by FIC) is similar to the FIC VG33 (custom BIOS and possibly other changes) and that board doesn't support Prescott CPUs. The VG33 BIOS hasn't been updated in almost 2 years by FIC, either. And emachines doesn't have any BIOS downloads for that system.

The board does support up to the P4 3.06GHz w/HT. Unfortunately, that's the only model of CPU with HT supported on that board.

BTW, click on your link. It's not the page you wanted to post. I had to look up the system separately.

sorry about that. so would the 3.06 ghz processor be worth the upgrade? the upgrade itself is for a gaming pc.?

Tough question. I would be a bump in bus and CPU speed, but I'm not sure if it would be a $280 bump. Hmm.

www.microcenter.com has the P4 3.06GHz w/HT for $199.99.

I have no idea what your original system speed is since you didn't mention it and your link doesn't show the config. I'm guessing you have a 400MHz FSB P4 or Celeron. A new Northwood P4 2.53GHz is going to be around $150. IMO, a P4 3.06GHz w/HT for $50 more is worth it. If you have PC2100 memory, you might want to upgrade to PC2700 memory instead to get a little more performance.

If you have a P4 2.6GHz (the only config for the w4682 I could find), there really isn't a worthwhile upgrade for that system. $200 (or less if you sell your old CPU) for HT and a few hundred MHz is kind of expensive. I'd recommend a motherboard replacement and new CPU instead (below). If you have a 400MHz FSB Northwood P4, that's good because those sell for a pretty good price on ebay to soften your upgrade cost.

Your second option is to just replace the CPU and motherboard (the system uses a standard micro-ATX board). This has 2 advantages: it's going to cost about the same as a 3.06GHz CPU and you can buy a board with overclocking capabilities. For example, you can get a retail P4 2.4/533MHz ($131 shipped) and a micro atx 865G motherboard (~$70 shipped.. or the same price for a better board if you already have an AGP video card) on pricewatch for around $200 and overclock it. Or even a retail Athlon 64 2800+ ($120 shipped) and micro atx Abit KV-80 ($71 shipped) for the same price (+ some overclocking).

Upgrading the CPU for a performance boost isn't always the best option when the older CPUs get to be very expensive. Both of the motherboard/CPU upgrade options above would give better performance boost after overclocking than just sticking in a 3.06GHz CPU in your current board for the same price.
