Upgrading CPU cooler

Hey guys, I am getting a new mobo to support new cards I am going to get, and since I am already going to have to re-seat my CPU I may as well get a better cooler. Right now I have an Arctic Cooler Freezer 7 Pro cooling my QX6850 which is at 3.33ghz. I have heard my cooler is decent but there are better ones out there, and I know my cpu is hot and potentially I can get a little more juice out of it with a better cooler. Can anyone suggest anything? Price doesn't matter much but I know coolers don't cost an arm and a leg as it is.

Heh, I guess you haven't taken a look at some of the coolers out there then.

Some of the best choices are HS's like the S1283, great price and good cooling, though you might want to pick up the bolt through kit so you don't have to deal with pishpins anymore. The TRUE is also a good choice, though it does not come with a fan, you have to supply your own. Do some searches, there are posts asking this question at least once a day, search google, reviews are out there.

And if you are willing to wait, check out the new CM V10 cooler that's coming out. I have a feeling it could be to the new "King" of air cooling, though I am betting it will have a 120+ price tag.

The Arctic Cooler Freezer 7 Pro is already a darn good cooler.

Here's an older article from Anandtech comparing many coolers. Granted, they are tested on an older CPU. The Arctic Cooler Freezer Pro is within a sneeze of the best heat sinks. Quiet a number of new coolers are out as well, but at least the article helps put what you have in perspective with it's contemporaries.

Also, you might try different types of TIM or check the IHS of your chip to see if it might benefit from lapping.

Whatever you do, make sure that it uses a back mounting plate and bolts through. Almost any cooler that uses push pins could be converted to bolt through by cutting the plastic pins off and using a Thermalright LGA775 Bolt-Thru-Kit.

Of course, if your really want to go off the deep end you could get a Thremalright TRUE Copper CPU heatsink. It's huge, all cooper, and massively heavy. Put a couple of 120mm fans on it in a push/pull config and you'll be good to go. And if you buy the 1366 bolt through kit, you can use it when you upgrade to i7.

And it's priced under $40 at Jab-Tech so is comparatively priced to the S 1283

Go for the Xigmatek S1283. Best bang for the buck.

That's your opinion, but not necessarily fact. This Scythe Mugen 2 vs Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme-1366 review clearly shows the Mugen 2 performs very well. So I respectfully disagree that the Xigmatek S1283 is the "best bang for the buck". Especially since they're both comparatively priced and the Scythe Mugen includes an excellent mounting bracket. With the Xigmatek S1283, you have to buy the mounting hardware separately. Nice marketing ploy.

The Xigmatek S1283 is a popular choice that has already been mentioned in this thread. I was just letting the OP know there are other excellent choices out there, which is what he was asking for.

The TRUE copper has shown to have little, VERY little advantage in temps over the standard TRUE but with MUCH more weight and a MUCH larger price tag.

Lol, I can see your enthusiasm about this new cooler, but quoting sales hype does not make it a good cooler, have you even got yours in and tested? I have not seen many reviews on it and the ones I have show the TRUE still taking top spot wile being smaller and lighter like the s1283, which also performs close with the TRUE.

The guy was just agreeing that its a good cooler and giving his opinion, nothing wrong with that. Also, the s1282 has push pins like many after market coolers because many people don't want to take out their mobo to fit a simple HS, if you want the bolt through style you need to get it extra, and with a price of only 30 bucks, paying another 8 or so for the kit is no big deal.

I don't know what your running now, but be sure to include your temps as of right now when you post with the new HS. Hope it does well, the only thing I don't like about it is how big it is, but then again I am really thinking about getting the V10 when it comes out.
