Alright so I live in a room in this large house that rarely gets a wireless connection to our far away wireless router, the thing is my friends laptop can generally easily connect, whereas my external Linksys wireless-g (WU5USB4G. V4, I believe) can rarely connect, even while the laptop can.

My question is can I upgrade this device (like the antenna), and if not do you guys know of any alternatives? I would purchase a long cable and set this device closer to the source, but the longest range of USB cables seems to be about 16-20'.

try searching the net for using aluminum foil and creating an antenna enhancer. it basically focuses the signal in a specific direction instead of having it the same distance in all directions. i think that's what you're looking for anyway.
