upgrading a S939 system...

So I'm updating my S939 system to use as a HTPC and a guest PC for lanparty's and such, when i finish building my new Phenom II x4 based system to use as my DAW and Gaming rig.

so my question is, the mobo's I'm looking at upgrading my S939 system with, all have just plain PCI-E x16. does that mean that if the graphics card I'm looking at (i.e. http://www.eworldsale.com/bfg-bfge981024gtge-geforce-9800-gt-1gb-gddr3-pci-e-20-x16-hdcp-ready_5871_31896.html ) is a PCI-E 2.0 card, it would not work ?

and also just out of curiosity what would you guys think would be the best PCI-E x16 (non 2.0) GPU i could get that would still allow me to play new games such as Cod MW 2 ? I was thinking the 9800GT series, cause most of the games like MW 1 and 2 and Battlefield: BC 2 say that the 8800GS or higher is Recommend, and so i figure the 9800GT is higher then that so it would work decently, not trying to get super crazy frame rates or anything, just be able to play like on medium settings or such.

I reckon a gts 250 or a 5770 would be a good bit better than that card you linked and should max MW2 and play BC2 on low/med(gts250) -> med/high(5770) depending on resolution.

re: pciex16 1.0 vs pciex16 2.0 - that doesn't matter until you get into 5970 territory at 25x16 and even then only in certain games iirc.

You need to do better research. A gts250 or HD5770 are not high end...
You are willing to pay $153+ for that old 9800GT yet the HD 5770 and GTS250 can be had for that same price (even less with rebates) and they perform much better. As for the PCI-E question, PCI-E 2.0 is backwards compatible with 1.0 so yes it will work.

It comes factory overclocked, costs less than that 9800GT you linked and it comes with a free game on top of free shipping.

I assumed his budget was the $153 price he was willing to pay for that out of stock 9800GT he kept linking. Based on that budget the link I gave gives the most performance per dollar and at a lower price.

I would also recommend the 5770 at this time for your contemplated usage. It is the fastest card in the $150 price range that offers DX11 technology.

The 9800GT you mentioned is in fact a rebranded 8800GT. The G92 technology that it is based upon debuted in October of 2007. So you're looking at tech that is nearly 3 years old with that video card. Nearly 4 years if you look at the base G80 tech released in November 2006. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GeForce_8_Series#GeForce_8800_Series

And yes PCIE 2.0 video cards are backwards compatible with PCIE 1.0 video card slots. You won't encounter bottlenecking issues until you start using the 'high end' parts, and even then it would be less than 5% according to most benchmarks. In terms of bandwidth, a PCIE x16 1.0 slot = a PCIE x8 2.0 slot.

It depends on your budget of course, but I think spending an extra $50 for a 5770 would serve you well here.

Now if you are ONLY considering Nvidia and want up to date tech, you'd have to wait for them to release a GT 450 or GT 460. The GTX 465 is too expensive for the performance it offers.

The GTS 250 offers an incremental performance increase vs the 9800GT if you don't mind using older tech and only want Nvidia branding.

Too bad you chose to jump instead of taking advice offered for what it is worth. If you had done a little research yourself, you would not have had to ask the question about the different standards of PCIe.

If you are even a little bit patirnt, you should be able to grab a nice card off of Ebay for about 50-70% of what you would pay by ordering it somewhere else.

A few months ago, I picked up an ASUS GTS250 NIB for $78 off of Ebay.

It took a week or so of endlessly using Gixen.com to snipe Ebay auctions, but in the end I paid what I was willing to pay for a better card then I had started out wanting to buy.

OP, your link to that 9800GT is suspect. I rarely see a red warning from mcaffe siteadvisor... run away from these guys, according to resellerratings. And what's with that DFI link, nothing much to it except some generic search results. Is this the actual motherboard you are getting?

Anyway, try this 9800gt for almost half the price. You should be able to play BFBC2 @ 1600x1200 (or so) with med settings butter smooth on a Phenom2 X4 and 9800GT. Really depends on your system specs, monitor, etc...

5770, 5750, GTS250 other good choices for your unconfirmed price range

I'd get a 5770. Although you can find used 4890's for about $150, I think the 5770 is better considering DX 11 support and much lower power consumption.

so high end was the wrong term, sorry, i just meant I dont want anything too expensive or new, just trying to upgrade an old rig, to hold me over til I got the money to build my new Phenom II x4 based rig

i dont want the GPU i linked to, i said I.E. as in example. the 9800GT i'm looking at is only 80.00$, i just want to kno if PCI-E 2.0 cards will work with a mobo that has just standard PCI-E ! and that question was answered, PCI-E 2.0 cards are backwards compatible so they will work with a standard PCI-E mobo, so thank you !

btw, i don't plan on buying my mobo from that place i linked, i was just googleing mobos, and then comparing them to newegg, i just used that link as an example to ask if a PCI-E 2.0 card would work with the mobo I linked to, that only had Standard PCI-E, and like I said, that question was answered so thanks for the help !
