I will be picking up a Compaq Armada pIII 700 mhz laptop later today for free, and was wondering if it is possible to upgrade the processors in laptops. I have never owned a laptop before, so I have never researched this before.

may be i could be wrong, but i do not think the processor of that laptop can be updated. most probably it is soldered with the mobo.

I doubt it is soldered directly to the board, but i have been wrong before. The best thing u can do is search the internet for a diagram on how to take it apart. If you have the processor for free, it never hurts to try.

There are many versions of PIII processors and they are usually non-interchangeable. You have a PIII 700 and maybe your best bet will be a PIII 800 Mhz, I could be wrong. Even a PIII 800Mhz fits your Compaq Amanda, does not warrant that little upgrade. If you are just typing or surfing, I think PIII 700Mhz is just OK.

Sure it is possible, but are you willing to give up an arm and a leg to do it? What I mean is that you have to find out if your motherboard support that chip or not. Assuming from your post, and let say you want to upgrade to core 2 duo, you have to replace the motherboard and ram, and they will cost you an arm and a leg. I believe the only component you can reuse is your case. My advice is not to do it. Get a new notebook for a cheaper price and save you the hassle.
