Hi all,

My brother is going off to work overseas and given me his PC :D

Its a DELL machine... Here are the specs :

Intel Core2 6600 @ 2.4GHz
Mainboard is Dell Inc. 0WG855
4GB RAM
Nvidia 7900 GS(256MB)
320GB WDC (but i have a 1TB external Maxtor)
2405FPW
2.1 DELL Speakers and built in sound card
Win Vista Ultimate

The machine itself is more than a year old now...so was just wondering what i could do to update the hardware a bit...Was thinking to change out the mobo, graphics and casing. Sound, ill upgrade later..Need a recommendation for mobo and casing and was thinking of the Gigabyte 4870 1GB DDR5 version. If i get that card, that would leave around 1k for board and casing...

Plan to upgrade in about a month. Im in Malaysia so am using prices from PCZone http://www.hardwarezone.com.my/priceguide/ Have a budget of about

Budget...looking at around 2k. What I'm really looking forward to playing is Empire Total War...im not someone who really really needs 100FPS at 19x12 etc. Just something that'll look good on my ol' 2405FPW ;)

Thanks !

Is that processor a Core 2 Duo or a Core 2 Quad?

Is the 2,000 budget in US Dollars or Malaysian currency? Where will you be buying parts from?

Ill get the model # and post it up later tonight...cant remember...and its a Core 2 Duo

2,000 Malaysian....if it was 2,000 USD I would have gotten a new PC altogether :p:p i wish...

Will be getting the parts locally (Malaysia)

Thanks !

My guess is that you have a Dell XPS 410 or Dimension 9200. If you have a 410 or 9200 then that is a BTX system meaning that the motherboard will not fit in an ATX system. PSU is an underrated 305w unit IIRC.

I wonder if a 5.25 bay psu like this http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx?Item=N82E16817104019 would work...

Since that way the BTX mobo/case can be left untouched, and the GPU upgrade can still take place.

Also, you can do the BSEL mod to overclock your e6600 to 3 GHz (up from 2.4).

oh nuts...forgot about the PSU...would definitely need to change that out too...so ok...if i throw in another 350...should be able to swing a good 550W PSU...

I'm confused. Which exact parts are you planning on keeping from the Dell? It sounds like all you want to keep is the CPU and RAM, aside from the monitor, of course, which doesn't save you much money, so you'd probably be better off buying an E7400 and a new 4GB kit thats DDR2-800 instead, so you can OC. Sell the dell whole, to help offset the cost of the new system.

If you really want to save money, simply upgrade the Vidcard and PSU, then OC with the BSEL mod mentioned above.

ah man..dude...now you got me all tempted...i wasnt even thinking of that...on a rough estimate..i can get about another 2k for my current system here...so that would be a mean a 4k budget..

Looking at the pricelist...i could get
i7 920,
4GB DDR3 1333 kit,
1TB Seagate,
Gigabyte X58-UD3R,
Asus 4870 DK HDTI 1GB DDR5,
CM 650W PSU

...all that comes to about 3700 (before bargaining) which leaves 300 plus for a casing and an optical drive (which is only about 100)...

Come back to us after you've made your decision between upgrading your Dell system or selling it. If you sell it, give us the budget that you'll be using for your new rig.

well..it was good suggestion to sell off my old system and get a new one...so im going to go with that...

Ok, so there's less confusion, please answer the sticky questions.
