hey i got a decent dell pc however i would like to upgrade the graphics card cuz its impossible to play games with the one currently installed.
Would buying an 8800gt and a 500watt psu be possible??
btw the cpu on the pc is intel pentium 4 524 3.06GHz chipset p965

would upgrading make a huge difference when playing games? i also have a 24 inch monitor

I upgraded my Dimension 4700 from a 6600GT to an 8800GS. This also required a PSU upgrade. This allows me to play Age of Conan at 1400 x 900 on "High" as long as I have shadows turned off. It was a cost effective upgrade that lets me play modern games without having to drastically reduce detail levels.

Which model Dell do you have? Have you checked the case to make sure you could physically fit new equipment?

Possible, yes, but largely a waste of time.
First of all, that system might/probably has an AGP slot and DDR ram.
Even if it doesn't, that cpu is going to be a big limiting factor, and the ram cost to support any gaming would be too high as well.

I look at it this way:
PSU: $100
Card: $150
More ram: $50

SO you are looking at upgrading a rather old system with $300 of stuff. At that, the system is probably only going to last you another year or so.

SO it seems to be largely a waste of time unless you also upgrade the cpu, but that'll be another $100 or so, and at that point you might as well just build/buy a whole new system.

well actually it has 4gb of ram in there a pretty decent sized case and is a dimension E520 im pretty sure it doesent have a AGP slot beacuse it has an ati radeon X1300

is it still i waste or no??

ic im trying to figure out if its an pci e or agp its an LGA775 and chipset p965/g965
does this give any information about wheater its pci e or agp or whether it will accept a conroe

good news i belive its pci -e express x16 according to cpu-z hopefully this is not a lie hahah

Not necesarily, but a quick google showed me it's probably PCI-E..
Either way, it also comes to your processor. That P4 is pretty limiting.

You are going to have to decide if it's worth a cpu, psu and gpu upgrade (assuming the motherboard can take a dual-core cpu).

That's a lot of $$ to sink into an older system.

it's a 965 chipset. Conroe should be fine and it should be PCIE. It's a 965 CHIPSET!!! Why there is a P4 is beyond me. Maybe prevous owner took the C2D out.

Nope, just Dell doing their thing...

yea nothing has been changed i donno is this chipset good beacuse the pc is a few years old maybe 3 - 2???

tough choice i have i could buy a new pc for 700 bucks or upgrade for about 350 ( psu, gpu, and cpu)

If you search around, you could find a Dell system using some of today's parts for around $400-$600. Check gotapex.com.

If you can, save up for more of a system overhaul. If you can't wait or don't want to, then just upgrade the vidcard. That CPU may be a bottleneck, though.

What's the service tag on that system? I'm just wondering if you can upgrade to one of the cheap Pentium Dual Core E2000 or E4000/E7000 chips.

what do you mean by like the mobo its an LGA 775 so i think it is capable though im not sure
chipset p965/g965

Well, if you're not sure, you can ask dell, and just give them your service tag. Hopefully their BIOS will support one of the newer CPUs I was talking about.
