Just wanted to share my results...

mobo = asus p5n-5 (650i)
2 gigs corsair @ 5-5-5-15-2
EVGA 8800GTX (768megs // 384 bit bus)

I had been overclocking my e6300 to around 2.3ghz

The e8400 is at 3600 currently and it a very noticeable improvement.

I got it because I got curious after pushing the e6300 as far as it would go and noticed some improvements... Saw a cheap upgrade and jumped on it.

I don't bother running orthos or prime, or seti, or folding crap... sorry - its a waste of electricity IMHO (lets not start a flame war on that please) so I can't say that it is stable or not

BUT

I did notice GTA 4 is playing ***MUCH*** more smoothly now. Memory timings are the same. I've only up'ed the CPU speed - and of course the extra L2 cache inherent on the CPU.

I've not lapped it or anything like that - using stock HSF @ 1.325 volts.

Just wanted to put this out there for anyone in my shoes... your 8800GTX is being held back by your low processor.

I asked this question around 6 months ago and had people laugh at me. Well... My satisfaction is all I need.

Cheers! Happy new years and may your CPU's be stable and your hard drives crash free!!
