I'm looking to upgrade my computer slightly, as I notice some choppiness with certain games (world of warcraft, to be exact).

I have:

Athlonx XP 1800+ (1.6Ghz)
Geforce 4 Ti4600
512 DDR PC2700

I'm thinking that I can get a better processor for cheap, and that would be the greatest performence increaser. Thoughts?

Actually you're just about the bottom rung in proc, mem and vid card for the high end games right now. Better than me btw(I'm waiting to finish a build to even be able to boot up EQ2 and WoW) so no offense meant but you might need to add a cpu/mem and vid card.

possibilities:
200ish 6600GTs AGP version are coming out.
s754 amd 2800+ would put U in the 64 bit rat race for about 140 bux.
s754 nf3 ultra mobos are about 80 bucks.
512 of 2700 ram depends on brand you are using and latency.
Replacement 1 gig of pc3200 ram could be 160-180 for big name value ram with good performance.

If these things are not financially viable then I'd upgrade vid card 1st, 2nd add ram and immediately overclock the cpu as far as it will go and remain stable. After it stays stable for a week try pushing it up one notch again as the burn in may alter higher results.

all depends on budget, i recamend a athlon 64 3200+ winchester core, retail is $210 U.S, and to be able to get that, u would need a new mobo........and any RAM will do if u dont want to overclock, get a 6800GT if u can afford one
