Hey all,
This is my set up currently:
Athlon XP 2200+
Geforce Ti 4600 128mb
1 Gig of Corsair XMS memory

So basically I was planning on upgrading my video card to the new Geforce 6800 GT but I have been reading that the newer cards are processor limited so I was thinking I would upgrade my processor to a 3200+ is this a good idea? gimme some input. I just write code, I'm not a hardware nerd! :)

what kind of motherboard you running? does it have any overclocking ability? if so then you could get a mobile athlon xp for half the price of a 3200+ and overclock it above 3200 speeds. that along with the video card upgrade should bring your system back up to snuff.

Well I am at work right now, and i dont have the info on my motherboard atm, but ive never done any overclocking so I'd be pretty nervous about trying it.

mobiles are around 50-70 dollars there pretty cheap to replace.

If you talking about the xp line up go with the 3200+ if you like still nice and amd64 IMO are not needed yet same with the intel 64 xeons now.

go for it, you will see a big difference with that processor/video card matched up

If you can swing it, go for an Athlon64 system.

Athlon64 3000+ retail: $175 shipped (a 3200+ is $40 more and not worth it)
MSI K8T NEO FSR: $63 shipped when purchased with the CPU (regularly $83 on it's own)
eVGA Geforce 6800GT: $429 Shipped

Total:$667

A little hefty in price, but man...it would last you alot longer than just a CPU upgrade and perform sooooooooo much better :D

EDIT>>>you could save about $160 and go with a 6800nu like I did http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-130-202&depa=1 ...My evga overclocks well (so far it's @ 370/800 (325/700 is stock) without breaking a sweat) and it has all the cool features of the 6 series...anyway, just a thought, and it would bring your total down to about $500...and still be a damn nice upgrade.
