Guys,
My friend is interested in making his computer "faster," close to Doom3 ready. He currently has a gatewaste
1.8Ghz P4
256Mb Pc800
Mx400 vidcard
Sin98SE
etc
So the upgrade is basically my system migrated over to his box.
Are these prices fair

a brand new 9700 Pro could be found for $209 on newegg w/ free shipping
XP home could be found on newegg for $91 also with free shipping
 
Yeah, you can bag XP cheaper. Also, doesn't he want a new case? For around 70-100 you can get decent cases with PSUs. Also, you may want to look into the IC7.

yea but these prices include installation . Reformatting HD, installing OS, apps, etc. Hence the retail-ish price. Im not trying to take advantage of him, but I need to make it worth my while to make such a small upgrade. He will proally only get the OS, MB and Ram first. Then maybe a few months later buy either a new vid card or mine. Still im upgrading to a MB that supports HT and DC mem, W/O a P4 C chip with HT. Still think its unfair?

I think it's a fair deal. You're not ripping him off, or 'hooking him up,' either one.
 
$150 for XP? I bought mine for $91, 9700Pro should be close to $175 since I can buy a new one for $209, how much memory because I can get 512mb (256x2) $154 for Corsair PC3500, I can get the same speed Geils for $136. That's too much for a 845PE board, you could get a Springdale board new for that price. What about case? You can find good cases with a PSU for $50- 100, example.
I think your charging just alittle too much, I'm selling one of my boards (AMD) to a friend, I bought it new for $69 and I'm selling to her for $50 and that includes install. The retail price now is $59.
 
If its your friend, you shouldn't be charging any installation fees. And you should sell him the parts for less than what it costs now.

you said its your friend? why dont you just charge him the actual cost. id do this for a friend for free anytime. in the long run friends always hit each other back with favors anyways. just my 2 cents though...
 
well those are actually prices (except XP which is only like 95 from newegg). Hes a co-worker actually. And my point is that I dont have a lot of money to buy a new system and I am very happy with what I have now. I am also familiar with what I have too. He wants his computer to be as fast as mine (doom3 will run okay on my system ((or so we think:D ))) he wanted to upgrade and learn about computers in the process (ill show him how to build a comp as I upgrade him). So at first, Im going to have to buy a new MB and RAM for myself (not a new CPU as hes going to wait on that). This mean new MB and faster ram which means nothing to me right now. Maybe in a few months he will get my vid card and Proc and Ill be able to get a HT P4c and OC with some faster ram. And a 9800pro wouldnt be bad either. I would buy him new stuff but it seems his price-range is right where my stuff is retail now. Im just trying to kill two birds with one stone. And I would do it all for free but...I dont have that kind of time (im a student studying for the DAT in May). I just want to be fair, hence y im asking your opinions.

I just remember that a 2500+ Barton and an Abit NF7-S cost about $185 from Newegg.

you act like upgrading his pc is going to cost you more than 2 hours or something. its not that big of a project.
 
Absolutely nothing wrong with making a small profit off a coworker... i do it all the time, especially considering the fact that your offering a tutorial. I have a feeling that this will cost more than 2 hours of your time btw. I say go for it but offer him some small/short warranty on the used hardware you sell him. If he plans to oc then only offer him a DOA warranty...
