Game perfomance is slow so with this system 640 x 480 medium quality in Q4

Encoding divx is good 70 fps usually

I am reading that the smithfield really sucks in games

I am considering a an E4300.

I would really like to know if this would increase games perfomance?

down the road I really will have to go to pci-e

cash strapped right now.

Your gaming seems below par for that system. Can you run 3dMark06 and post your scores.

Reason being is I had a D805 and a 7600gt system with the same memory as you, heck I could even rebuild that system to test it. Anyway it wasn't a blazing beast but I had no trouble gameing at descent settings.

I'm just thinking that something else is causing your low preformance .

Also have you overclocked you 820 at all.

I agree..I think you have some other issues...I have no problems either with gaming at descent settings and my rig isnt too great..

running the most current bios

3d mark 06 score is 3004

return to proxycon 9.54 fps at 1280 x1024

firefly forest 10.73 fps at 1280X1024

sm 3 canyon flight 10.14 fps at 1280 x 1024

deep freeze 12.52 fps at 1280 X 1024

driver 93.71

fast writes are enabled and global 3d settings are performance

cpu1 red valley .444 fps
cpu2 red valley .677 fps

page file is 2049-4096 on sata drive

what am I missing here?

this is a new system
have had no stability issues at.
it just seems sluggish with games

Hit Alt-ctrl-del to get to task manager and let me know how many processes are runnning. It could be something that simple or something as simple as spyware.

You said it is new, did you build it or is it from a big box, sometimes they load them up with crap.

Also try turning of your fast write in the bios some cards just don't do well with it

there are 36 processes running, none of which are bad. I have done a spyware scan nothing shows.
This is home built from scratch. I put it together about 2 weeks ago.

I cannot find an option in bios to disable fast writes. I did find an option for memory enhancement. I enabled it and gained a 6% increase in memory efficiency.
also set agp aperture to 256

No improvement in 3d mark though

I do have another machine an AMD 64 2800+ socket 754 with nf3 chipset and 2gig of ddr 400.
This machine has an agp 6600 gt roughly half the power of the 7800 gs. I ran 3dmark and got a score of 1410 roughly half of the 7800 GS. IT may be that the 820 is a dog in games.

I have ran tuneup utilities 2007 scanned for errors, etc
turned off indexing and other tweaks no gain.
There is no option for FSB adjustments in the bios so i can't overclock.

I appreciate your advice in this

I don't know of anything else except to upgrade to c2d.

I just logged into ORB and compared some scores are a little low but I couldn't find an exact match to your system.

I still think something other than the "system" is causeing your problem. A 7800gs isn't super but should still be able to run Q4.

Random things to try to see if in game improvess.

Turn of Vertical Sync
Turn AA's off
If you have option in bios try AGP at 4X and 8X don't know why but sometimes 4X is better.
Disable Video Bios cache

Sorry I was writeing last post and didn't see yours.

There is no doubt that a 4300 will give you beter preformance than a D820. I hope it makes a huge improvement, let us know what happens I'm pretty curisous now to see what the results are.
