Im going to upgrade to c2d, and i was wondering what cpu/mobo combo i should get.

My goal is to get 3.6ghz+ (under water). I was originally thinking

e6400
Asus P5B Deluxe Wifi/AP
Ballistix DDR2 800

but, i wasnt sure whether to get an e6600 and a motherboard that isnt expensive that does do such a high FSB (because the e6600's 9x multi rather than the e6400's 8x). I am not going to wait for RD600 because I need 3 PCI slots and it doesnt seem like thats going to happen with the 3x pcie slots.

So, do you think I should get the e6400 combo (lower multi, more expensive higher FSB mobo) or an e6600 combo with some other motherboard.

on the motherboard i would get that ASUS, you can never underestimate the power of a good mobo.
For the CPU you might have a better chance of reaching your goal with the E6600, but you never know. Many E6400's are clocking like monsters.
as for ram i would look at either Team Group Xtreme 667MHZ 3-4-4-8, OCZ XTC, or G.Skill HZ

I have 2 sets of TeamX 677MHz with D9GMH IC's and both sets will do 1033MHz @ 4-4-4-12 with 2.35Volts

so just getting the e6400 will be fine (you think).

check the conroe oc database on this forum. 13 6600's doing 3600, 3 6400's, zero 6300's. any ram that will run 1/1 (ddr2 800/pc6400) will be fine. running ram faster than 1/1 kind of pointless with c2d, as are tight timings.
 
cheap and fast is exactly what im looking for :)

but i have to wonder whta the differences between that and the deluxe wifi version is.

the only thing i see is a different south bridge, no wifi, and different cooling. The southbridge is an ICH8 while an ICH8R on the deluxe. are there any other differences im overlooking?
 
pshh, i dont need that.

instead of the e6400/P5B Deluxe WIFI (about $230+ $179or$239=$415-$475 depending on wherei get it)

i could do this

e6600/P5B (regular...still gets around 500fsb) (about $330+$130=460)

or even an e6400/P5B ($230+130=360)

would an e6400/P5B really get me to my goal of 3.6ghz?

BTW, ive been looking at this article, and it says 500FSB is possible with this board, but it also says that the e6400/e6600 clock pretty closely together.

i know, its always a chance with overclocking. im asking which do you guys think is the best bet for the cheapest?
 
I've got a gigabyte ds3 that is running flawlessly with a e6300 at 400 x 7. Easiest overclock I've ever done. All I did when I got the combo running was up the fsb to 400 and it worked like a charm.
