I Build my PC about 1yr ago in march before pci express picked up. :mad: But I Have to upgrade soon my video card I have a
p4p800deluxe asus mobo,
P4 2.8 HT 800bus,
512 ram,
extigy zx2,
430mhz antec power suply.
and a ti4200 64mb.
Since its fairly new i dont wanna dump my pc, decent performance. I can get a x850xt agp for $350, Is it worth it?

the 7800 GT is comming out on Aug 11 and will retail for 399$ (its pci-e only so far btw)

20 pipelines of goodness.

at the very least at least wait a couple days after that date for prices to fall on ati chips.
 
I would get more RAM before worring about the video card. I remember when I played on a P4 2.53 with 512mb of ram and a Ti4600. When I went to a gig it was a night and day difference, especially for loading times. It would suck to have a great card and still have BF2 play like a slideshow.

After that, if you've got the cash you could get the X850 XT. Directron.com has AGP X800 XL's for $275 if you need to go lower. It'll still blow that Ti4200 away.
 
If you buy an AGP card that outclasses your current system, you could later use it in your next system by purchasing one of those PCIe/AGP motherboards. They have perfectly acceptable performace and allow you to incrementally upgrade your entire system.
 
I considered goin pci but the cost is big,
new mobo at least $150.
AMD 64 about 200-400 if i go with the good stuff amd 64 fx-- bout $600-1000. then i have to dump my power supply
bout $60 for a nice antec 550power ,add a
nvidia 7800gtx $550,
1gb consair $200
thats about 1,500 cheapest, $2400 max
 
You've got a good setup, just get more ram and a new video card. AMD's launching it's new 940 pin socket/processors in early 06. That would be a good time to build a whole new system.
