So I have told the wife (been given permission) that I am going to upgrade something in my system. Unfortunately I am not 100% sure on what would benefit me the most. I like to game, and I like eye candy when I game
my current rig is:
e6850@3.6ghz on an arctic cooling freezer pro 7
gigabyte P35-DS3R
sapphire dual slot 4850
2 x 1gb adata ddr2 800mhz (generic ram, but does what it should)
1 x 120gb hdd, and 2 x 320gb (all sata)
enermax liberty 620w modular psu
audigy 2 zs soundcard
pioneer dvd writer
enermax chakra case
samsung 226bw

Right, i was thinking that a new video card would be the way to go, and I am looking at getting another ati card as i am VERY impressed with my 4850. Would a 4890 be worth upgrading to? I was also thinking about going to a 5850 or a 5770 but would they be a) worth it, and b) bottlenecked by my cpu?
If i upgrade my cpu (to an e8* more than likely) then I dont think i would be able to go to the 5* card and would have to look at a 4890, which i dont know is worth upgrading to....
i need some advice please guys :)
edit: oh, and i live in new zealand so newegg is a no go for me. If you want to use the sites i will be looking to buy from then they are. oh and i have a budget of about $600-700 NZ

Which resolution do you game at? If an HD4850 is doing fine for you, you may just want to upgrade to the HD5770 and call it a day. (You shouldn't need to upgrade the E6850 if you aren't experiencing any performance issues.)

Since you are not 100% sure what benefits you need, the road is wide open and anything can go :)

1. Maybe a bigger brilliant 1920x1080 wide LCD for native HD playback. good to share private movie time with friends and family. Though you may need to upgrade VGA card to meet higher resolution gaming.

2. Since you like gaming, perhaps you notice sometimes your body is highly tensioned during or after the game. I suggest a good high quality chair. But you need other pro to help with the model recommendation. I think other family members will appreciate this as well.

3. A small size good quality and reasonable price SSD will help everything including gaming. But you need to optimize a bit to protect the SSD so it takes slightly more work.

4. New Zealand is a beautiful place. I saw many wonderful scenery on web and also info from people once staying there. Perhaps exploring your country more instead of bidding time on gaining skill-sets in the virtual world? OK my apology for this last suggestion, I know this is a computer forum. :)

lol

First figure out what tasks your PC cannot perform to your satisfaction, and go from there. An SSD would definitely be a great overall upgrade, but prices are still high right now. Personally, I like to skip a GPU generation with vidcards, so I notice the performance increase more when I get the new card, lol (unless performance with the "current" card has become unacceptable before the new gen arrives).
