Im looking to upgrade a video card for my gateway system. I dont really want to buy a new power supply so I was curious what I could get away with that may be a bonus.

System is a Gateway FX-6800-01e currently has a 4850 512mb

I would like to get a little boost to help with newer games and definately get DX11 in some shape or form. Im planning on building a gaming rig later on early next year but would liek to keep this rig until then.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

If the system can power a 4850, it should be able to power a 6850, possibly 6870. Both parts use less power than the 4870 in idle. The 6870 uses slightly more power under load.

Yeah, like he said, you should be able to support a 6850 and depending on the quality of your PSU, you may be able to support a 6870 or 560.
 
With your current setup I'd get a 6870. Optionally, if you'd like drivers, get a 560 Ti.

I wonder why people who buy Gateway or Dell, whatever are lucky to have eSATA, Firewire etc. on their motherboards while people who look to build their own system have to hunt down motherboards that have those kinds of features, AND the media card readers.

Anyway, I know it says 500 watt power supply. But, if you look on the side of the power supply after removing the side panel, you should see where it says 12V. Then obviously if it says 18A twice you might have enough for say a GTX460 with room to spare. I'm just saying this so you know just in case.
