Upgrade VGA in SG01-E

Hi folks, I need your help,
I'm having temperature problems with my current rig. My 8800GTS is 70ºC idle, and gets 80ºC easily while playing BF BC2, in part because my Audigy 2zs is blocking pretty much all the air.
I decided to upgrade my VGA. The problem is that I can't find something taht fits in my SG01-E.

I play in 1680x1050 and I need CUDA, so I have this nVIDIA cards in mind:

GTX 460:
MSI N460GTX Cyclone 1GD5/OC (I think the cooler will hit the top fan)
Gigabyte GV-N460OC-768I (Can't find the dimensions. 1GB model is 255mm length, some websites says 230mm)

GTX 550 Ti:
MSI N550GTX-Ti Cyclone II 1GD5/OC (I think the cooler will hit the top fan)

Which is the best refrigerated card that will fit in my case? Having in mind that I have the sound card next to the VGA. Max length 9.6" (24cm).

Thanks in advance,
azeós.

I really like my evga gtx 460. It is small and runs pretty cool. I have it in a micro atx case that is larger than yours but it should fit. I run games at 1080p and mostly with high details. Looks great on my 100" screen.

Don't get non reference cards for SFF rigs. Get one that blows air outside ;D.

I would think one of the EVGA GTX 460 EE (external exhaust) models would be a reasonable solution for your setup. They are only 210mm long and use a blower fan on a fully enclosed shroud to exhaust heat from the case.

Unfortunately, it looks like EVGA may be discontinuing that model. I don't see it on their list on their site now and it is out of stock at Newegg. A google shopping search for the card yielded several results of places that still have them in stock though, for example: http://www.provantage.com/evga-01g-p3-1371-ar~7EVGA0J2.htm

That is the card I'm using. I like the EE, it is a little louder but still not too loud. I have the FTW edition which was heavily overclocked out of the box. Very nice card.

If you can relocate the hard drives you can fit a 6990 in the case. I have an Asus Direct II cu 6950 3 slot card in mine. Will see if I can get some pics later tonight.

What temperature do you have in idle?

Thx for the tip. But what about the sound card blocking the fan?

I'm from Argentina, this is the EVGA that I can get: EVGA 01G-P3-1371-TR
It doesn't says "external exhaust", but the design is the same. Or am I wrong?

Thanks mate, that would be great.

The picture would indicate that it is one of the external exhaust models. The stock cooler for a GTX 460 has the fan centered in the middle of the board while the EE versions from EVGA have the blower fan at the end like the model you linked. With these blower fan models the fan should mostly extend beyond the length of your sound card and be able to get all the air they need.

Ok, thanks for the clarification.
However, I'm not really sure that the card will be able to get air without problems. In the picture of the first post, it can be seen that only half of the fan is visible. The EVGA is a little shorter than the 8800GTS, but the fan is at the end. So, I think, again only half of the fan will be visible.

If that's the case, it will get enough air?

Thx a lot.

I estimate that about half of the fan on a GTX 460 EE will extend beyond the sound card. You'll notice that the EE blower is actually very near the end of the card while the 8800GTS in your picture has the last centimeter or so populated with capacitors and plugs. I would think the card would get enough air with that setup, especially since there should still be a little bit of gap between the soundcard and the video card.

If you are specifically looking for a longer blower-cooled card, you are going to need to step up to a more powerful graphics card. Pretty much every other solution in the GTX 460 or GTX 550 class is going to put the fan in the middle of the graphics card (which will not solve your dilemma of the sound card constricting the air intake) and/or it is an semi-open shroud model that is going to dump half of the GPU heat straight into your case. Your original post says that your case can fit a 9.6" inch card which is 244mm. Of the blower-style Nvidia cards, the shortest one I come up with after the GTX 460 EE models is a GTX 470 which is 9.5" (241mm) long. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130616 According to your measurements, that would fit, especially since the power plugs will be on top of the card instead of extending beyond the right edge. It is an overall hotter card, but it does exhaust the heat to the outside. The trick may be finding one of those models still in stock (the one linked is a recertified card) as Nvidia has largely moved on to the 560 models for that speed class. A GTX 470, however, is probably going to run with temperatures similar to what you are alarmed about in your first post. Most of your more powerful graphics cards these days are going to run 70-80°C under load if not more, and that's in an open test bench.

Well, then that's all. I'll get the EVGA GTX 460.
Thank you all, I really appreciate your help.

Thanks mate, that would be great.

idle is in the low to mid 30's, this is using enermax tb silience fans in my case (3 120mm and 1 140mm). typically in the 33-36C range. Under a load the card goes into the mid 60's maybe into the low to mid 70's using furmark.

The card you listed in the EE one, the EE has the fan at the back of the card, non-EE has fan in the middle of the card.

Those are very nice temps. I Hope get something similar.
I think I'll buy it next week.

so here is a pic of my old reference 6950 in the sg01. As you can see since I don't use the hard drive cage I was able to fit a long card in there that remains quite cool. I since switched the 3 slot Asus which is even quieter and cooler and its fits just fine.
