upgrade version of xp work on new build?

i can get AP pricing on upgrade version of xp pro at school and i was wondering if i get that will it work with my new build? also how would they even know if i was really in school??? can i still use it next year when im out? thanks for any help.
 
anyone im going to buy it in the morning so i need to know soon. sorry for the rush but i have to go to bed soon. thanks!
 
It will but you better have an actual copy of a previous version of Windows. During the install process, XP will prompt you to insert your previous version of Windows to verify you qualify for installing it.
