I have the board from a Dell T3500 with a W3670 I picked up for $40 off ebay a few months back and 8gb of ram. I've recently put it in my 4u rack mount server case and I've been thinking of investing a bit more into it to give a more longer (2-3 yr) system. I have an AMD 7850 1GB card fill-in for now and game on a 32" 1080p tv.
I have a friend who is willing to sell me his EVGA x58 3way sli board, Noctua Dual Fan heatsink(not sure the model but it was 100 new back in the day), and a GTX 680 for $210 shipped. Everything works to my knowledge. I was thinking of getting this and seeing what this w3670 could do, and if it could hit 4+ ghz I think it could be a longer term system. If not, I figured I could sell it and get my money back.
The other thought was just to keep the CPU at stock and just get a better GPU with the money. Is there going to be enough gain with overclocking the CPU from a gaming perspective? I had hoped to build a zen 2 system first of next year, but if I do this I wouldn't have to.
Thoughts?
