Hey guys, I got a macbook pro last april which came with Tiger, I was wondering what you guys who have it, think about Leopard, is it something I should really invest in? or should I wait. I want to dual boot with windows in the future, does that make it a must have?

thanks for your input,

Evan

Does Tiger have Boot Camp? I've only used Leopard on my MBP, so my Mac OS experience is limited. Windows runs very smoothly on my MBP.

Leopard has boot camp built in, Tiger does not. You can no longer download boot camp to run it on Leopard. As far as I know, if you have boot camp downloaded you can still use it with Tiger, but Apple will no longer "support" it. I have Leopard on my MBP and I love it, just for all the fancy bells and whistles it has. I haven't noticed any of the crashes people have complained about. There are one or two bugs but that's mainly because I'm using a lot of beta software. Personally I think Leopard is pretty nifty, and I would upgrade, although you don't have to.

Leopard is definitely a worthy step up from Tiger.

Boot Camp with Tiger was a "beta" that has sort of "expired" (not really, since the only software installed were drivers). It will still work if you have it, but it no longer is available for download, and is built in to Leopard

so the verdict IMHO: Go with Leopard.

I upgraded two weeks ago and It's nice.....nothing too huge but it definitely has made some tasks easier and I really like the changes to iCal and the Finder. Also spaces is very useful.

I would update it, Leopard runs great on my white 20" imac (late 2006).

You'll need Leopard if you want Bootcamp. I'm sure you can hack something together but Leopard officially supports it.

I'm running Leopard on an Oct'06 MBP (15", 2.33ghz, 2gRam, 160gHD) and it's a superb dev machine. Spaces and TimeMachine are my favorite additions. Both have their quirks but will get better over time. The only issue I've had with Leopard is running StarTeam Java client. It's ridiculously slow, it runs faster on my Tiger powered Powerbook (15.4", 1.5ghz G4, 2g Ram, 80gHD).

I upgraded to Leopard from Tiger... Mixed reviews personally.

Startup takes longer, and I get more application crashes... But lots of things are simply snappier.

Worth 120$? Hell no.

Worth 40$ at my school... Hell yes ;)

Nope, most schools sell it for 80$ or so. I was taking a single computer science class for the GPA boost it would provide, and I qualified for a special discount :)

at IU its like $100. my roommate just bought it. he likes it so far. you got a deal for $40 though.

Find 4 others to go in it with you - it's what, $129 for one and $200 for 5? Maybe 4? That's definitely the way to go.

apple is all about honesty.
And limiting their operating system to Apple hardware. If your purchasing an Apple OS, you have already paid the premium for the hardware to use it. I think thats the missing step before "profit":D

what is this apple honesty are you talking about? heh :p

It's not bad for Apple. The computer purchase subsidized the OS.

Nobody cracking genuine installations, holes in the OS.
