Hi there,

This is the first time posting so i hope i get all that is required.

My specs:

Q6600 @ 3.0
8gigs of PC6400 ram
5 Sata Hdds ( 2 in raid 0 config)
550w Corsair Power supply
Asus 8800gt TOP
Ultra 120 Heatsink
Antec 900 case
Vista Ultimate x64
1 28inch Monitor (1900x1200) and 1 22inch (1900x1200)
Can't remember Motherboard but its not sli compatible.



I am currently looking to upgrade my video card from an 8800gt to either a gtx 275 / gtx 285. I run all my games at 1900x1200 res.

My first question is will my power supply be able to take either a 275 / 285 or will i have to upgrade it?

Secondly, with this upgrade will i see a big performance difference if i upgrade to Windows 7 for the Direct X 11 .. i primarily play Modern Warfare: 2 and WOW (in windowed mode)

Thirdly, should i go to an ATI card if i upgrade to windows 7 are they better performance / price?

And finally should i upgrade my board to support sli and go with a sli solution?

Any help would greatly appreicated.. i just don't know what my best option is since there are so many :D
 
you dont need windows 7 for dx11, vista can use it also.

Yes either card will be a big performance increase, and no you probably wouldn't need SLI at that res for most games out there now.

If you're not dead set on nVidia, the 5850 or 5870 are better bang for your buck by far right now. I'd recommend one of those or wait for Fermi.

No one here is gonna recommend either the 275 or 285 to you at this point.

Also, the 550 W corsair should be plenty.
 
The 275 and 285 just arent worth in when the 5850 from ATI is about 15-25% faster than the GTX 285 and its a hell of a lot cheaper too. Not to mention that if you want to use DX11, you have to have a DX11 compatible card and nothing Nvidia has right now is DX11 compatible. Your only options for DX11 hardware right now is the 5000 series from ATI and you best option would be the 5850 as it offers the absolute best bang for buck
 
with dual monitors will the 550watt pwr supply be enough for the 5850?
 
Why would dual monitors matter to the computer's PSU?

Yes, the Corsair 550W is a good unit. Some other brands definitely wouldn't be enough for a 5850.
 
i was reading up and it says that when using 2 monitors you have to double the idle power usage so i just wanted to make sure it was good with the 5 hdds i have in my pc and 1 optical drive.
 
Doesn't the 5850 uses less power than the 275 and 285. I think the 275 and 285 might be a bit tight on power if he's running that many HDDs.
 
but assuming i go with the 5850 which seem very likely now based on feedback i should be ok?
 
HD 5850...with a condition attached. There have been some cheap GTX275's on sale at BestBuy for around $180-$200 if you can get one anywhere at under $200, then that represents better value and bang for buck than the HD5850.
other than that the HD5850 is a wise choice and offers superior performance with DX11 aswell.
 
UPDATE:

I went out and bought a 5850. I get it hooked up my system posts and goes into windows i try to open the Ati website to d/l current drivers and seems my onboard nic card is showing "Network Cable Unplugged" i thought that strange so i checked all the connections between router and pc all ok.. i even tried another cable .. i noticed there were no link lights on.. again .. strange.. i check the device manager and the card is working fine (apparently) ... so in trouble shooting i removed power from all hdds accept the boot drives and rebooted.. still cable unplugged..

I also have a dlink gigabit card in my pc and that wasn't even detecting now. At this point i am really leaning towards a power issue. So i removed that card as well and tried to boot with no success. so then after some further trial and errors with the number of hdds i have i then tried to put the gigabit card back in and as soon as the post happened the pc just turned off and came back on and wouldn't post .. i removed the card and it posted good.. but still the no cable issue in windows.

So its late and i am frustrated so i put the old 8800gt back in boot into windows same deal .. so i turn off the pc .. unplug the power cord from the pwr supply and call it a night.. i get up this morning and i plug in the pc and turn it on and my fricken nic is working again.. .. so i am just a little confused.. is it my power supply isn't enough .. i dont think its a MB issue..

Any thoughts would be a great help.

Not trying to offend you...but I honestly think it might be user error on the cord.

I am a PC tech dude.. A+ certified .. and ya.. i just never encountered this issue before..

When you put the NIC card back in...was it the same PCI slot?

Also did ya try a different cord too?.....I agree man its pretty fuckin odd I have never seen that issue before.

Like I said before bro I was really not trying to offend at all, I did not know your Computer background knowledge. But this one would have me stumped too...
 
Hmm .. didn't try a different cord but i did try other pci slot i had avail.. .. before i go out and buy a power supply i am going to try one more time to put the ati card back in. I was just wondering if other people thought it may be a power issue .. cause with 5hd's / 1 sata cdrom and the 5850 and the q6600 with like 5 case fans and the one big fan on the 900 case i think the well might be very low and thats was causing issues.. but its the onboard nic i use for inet and not the dlink i think i should have said that ..

update: i just did a calculation of my power usuage with this website:

and it says my usage is at round 624 watts .. and give or take 50watts or so seems i might be running it at the line..

Although I was worried about your power situation with the number of devices you have, I'm confused as to why it did not work after you removed everything except the boot drive which makes me question whether or not it is the PSU or something else causing the anomaly.
 
I too am worried that it might be something else .. what i am going to do when i get home today is try to put the ati card back in and see if it does the same thing again..

i went back to that site and recalculated my power and i had something selected wrong so my total power needed is about 450 watts so i am going to try to go back and figure out what is going on

just wanted to update you guys and say after all that its working fine now.. with the orig power supply.. it was weird i didn't know why it did wat it did.. thanks for all your help on the situation.
