I've read through a few of the postings on newer video cards, but no one seems to be on the beam with my dollar range of cards. I'm looking into the $100 +/- $30 range. I've heard of the nasty things that valve did to the FX line of cards, but I don't even own a copy of HL2 (blasphemy, I know). Basically I'm playing Doom 3 at 640 x 480 and would like to fix that up. Thanks for any suggestions.

2.8GHz Prescott oc'ed to ~ 3 GHz
512MB PC3200 (one chip)
ATi 9200 64MB
Sound Blaster Audigy
2 x 80GB WD (8MB cache)
19" Sceptre LCD (12ms rating)
and the optical drives don't matter
 
I'd say go for a geforce 6800 and try to unlock it, wait till you can get one in the 200$ range. I think fry has one now for 230$. But you def. need to upgrade your video card

wait for a deal on a 9600 XT becuz i saw a deal at BB for 70 AR which was pretty darn hot. christmas is just around the corner so look out for sweet deals. if u don't get a deal around christmas then just buy w/e is cheap. but imo u should wait for a deal which im sure will come cuz of christmas. try hard to get a 9800 pro used. i've seen some go for 140.
 
Try to find a used 9800Pro off of these forums in the forsale/trade section. I see a lot of 9700Pros for around 110-130$ and even some 9800Pros around that price range.
 
If you need it right now, look for the 9600XT on sale for about 70. Its not worth any more than that with the current midrange cards out. Personally, I'd save and put that money toward a 6800nu. Those are a great value and they're a significant improvement over what you're seeing now. You won't be able to go past 1024x768 on medium, maaaybe high settings with the 9600XT. My friend's 9600se won't go past 800x600 on LOW quality. You might wanna wait for the 6600GT to drop to about 150 and that would outperform even a 9800pro.

How long do you think it will be before the newer cards from nvidia will be available in my price range? I'd definately like to up my specs, but if I'm going to wait I don't want it to be more than a few months.

What's the deal with 9700s and 9800s that aren't marked with a suffix (Pro, SE, XT, etc.)? Would these be worth purchasing? Because I can stretch just a bit more if there is a really good deal waiting for me.

if u can purchase a 9800 pro. u can purchase a 6600 GT or a 6800 NU. if i were u, wait for a good deal on the 6800 NU and snag it for 200 like i did.
 
The older non-pro and non-xt cards aren't a good value compared to the midrange of today. The se of any card is total crap so don't even bother with them. If you wait or put a little more cash toward the card you'll be set for a while with a 6800nu and won't need to upgrade nearly as soon. You won't be able to play the latest, or upcoming games at decent resolution with an old card, like the ones your talking about getting.
