hello guys, I really need some help, what with far cry and unreal 2004 out in the next few days(over here in the uk) I think its about time to upgrade my video card, its been good to me for about 3 years now but it doesnt cut the mustard any more!

currently I have a P4 1.8 ghz, 512 megs SDram and a geforce 2 mx with an AGP x 4 motherboard

what card should I buy which will give me optimum performance, I was thinking of the 9600 pro/xt card but would my system cpu/ram bottleneck that card, I dont want to spend money on say a 9800 xt when my system is only able to use 60% of its total power if you understand what I mean.

I have done a search but no one seems to have a system like mine and so their needs differ

any advice you could offer would be excellent

thanks

A 9600XT or 9700Pro(if you can find one) would be good for that system and wouldnt bottleneck it!;)

I'd recommend a 9800 Pro 128mb, can get one for around $215 from newegg. It will last you a good while, i'm sure, and will not be totally bottlenecked by your system.

speaking of the 9800 series, how much of a power supply is required? i only have a 350 one and i dont know how to install another, more powerful, one.

i have about 150 pounds (english) to spend

so far a 9600 xt 128 or a 9800 128 meg version have been suggested, are you sure that 9800 may be overkill in my system? could any one suggest the average fps increase that i would get from a 9800 over a 9600?

jussA: how does your system perform in games such as far cry? you have a simular system to me with a geforce fx in there, I was wondering how that holds up

Just because the 9800pro MAY BE bottlenecked doesnt mean it will hinder performance.... it will just run every game to the max that it can.

9800pro and then youll have a card to build your next system around

but why buy a card that will not be able to achieve maximum output in my machine, when I build another machineI will get another card which is more suited to that particular power level.
