Upgrade stock CPU cooler

Hello everyone,

My stock Intel cooler is really loud and distracting even when surfing the web, let alone gaming. So I was wondering if a new cooler would reduce the noise level from my computer?

Computer Specs are based off of a budget build by danny bui a few years ago, with some slight improvements over time.

CPU:
i5-2500k
Motherboard:
MSI P67A-G45 Intel P67 ATX
GPU:
XFX HD-687A-ZNFC Radeon HD 6870 1GB PCI-E

Case:
Silverstone FT02

I've been out of the loop on coolers for awhile, last time I was aware the tuniq tower was the most recommended option, so I would really appreciate your help. Would one of these two be a good solution to my problem?

Corsair H60
Noctua NH-D14

Thanks in advance.

You don't really need to spend that much.

Go with the Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus instead. (Yes, the thermal compound that comes with it is more than enough.)

I used the Hyper 212 Evo in my son's rig late last year and it's quiet and keeps his CPU nice and cool.

I own both of these in different systems, both highly recommended. Though I have kinda replaced the stock fan with a quiet noctua one in my desktop. (yup, spent about as much on the fan as I did on the heatsync)

one small word of warning though: they can kick off a well now I can hear $foo chain and more money spent. :) the end result worth it though.

Hey thanks for the recommendations.

I'm thinking about going for the EVO revision of the Cooler master. Its supposed to be a revision of the 212+. It's base price is also less than the stock 212+ and has an additional mail in rebate. Is there any reason to choose the 212+ instead?

Also, should I use the included thermal compound or should I use the tube of AS5 I have left over from my 939 overclocking days?

I forgot to include this in the original post, but I also need to replace my CD burner. I was reformatting my computer but my Drive took ~16 hours to load/read a Windows 7 disc. It also consistently fails to read/rip audio CDs. I know USB drives and online downloads have replaced CD's but I still buy/have some albums from smaller artists and older foreign bands that haven't made it onto any of the online album store fronts.

So is there a recommended CD/Blu Ray drive?

The EVO model is slightly better than the Plus model, but you should get it if they both cost around the same.

Nowadays, all internal DVD burners perform about the same. Many of them are available for less than $25 shipped. I recommend finding the cheapest SATA DVD burner you canfind.

This. Again.

Except, almost all DVD/CD burners/readers are made by the same company. I think only two or three manufacture them, everyone just slaps their brand name on it.

Either will work just about equally well if one isn't overclocking.

Use the stuff with the 212+ cooler, don't use that old AS5.

To repeat (yet again):

- Get the cheaper between the Hyper 212 Plus and the Hyper 212 EVO.
- Use the thermal compound that comes with your new CPU cooler instead of your old tube of AS5.
- Get the cheapest SATA DVD burner you can find.
