Upgrade Stategy - E6300 or E6600?

I've been pondering which chip to get. Thing is I got *screwed* buying a 2.8 P4 on the 478 and of course AGP phasing out didnt help any.

So I'm tempted to pay top dollar for a 6800 or even a quad core - but it seems wasteful and I can always upgrade the CPU later right? Of course that's what I said last time!

So how long will LGA775 be good for? Just get a E6300 for now or what? Its not like any games really tap out an OC'ed E6300 right?

What is the upgrade/budgeting consensus out there? What is optimal???

At this point I think the E6400 is optimal is you would like to get into overclocking. It is easier to reach high CPU speed with the E6400 because you don;t have to push the front side bus speed as much. I think anything over about 2800 MHz in a core 2 dual you could not peg the CPU. Even a E6400 at stock speed is a very very powerful system for today's games.

The LGA775 will be around for a very long time. The core 2 dual is still a new chip and the quad cores not even released yet, both of them use LGA775 pinout. If you get a motherboard that is quad core ready you will get quite a few years out of it.

atm the e6400 is the sweetspot:
1. It has the higher multi over the e6300 making overclocking to higher FSB's easier w/o maxing out your ram.
2. It requires less voltage to get over 3ghz than the e6600 does
3. Will overclock past 3ghz on the stock cooler if you don't mind higher temps

It looks like intel will be keeping the socket 775/965 but then when it comes to tech nothing is set in stone :)

That's what I'm banking on. As an aside, how do I absolutely guarantee I'll get a Rev. 2 if I order a DS3?

Buy it from newegg.com one of the sponsors, they have fresh stock. I ordered mine on December the 27th and it was a DS3 rev2.

As I am typing this, in the background I am benchmarking my E6400 and DS3 rev2 at 8x450=3600 MHz. Fast enough for ye? :D

The E6400 really is the sweet spot for overclocking right now because the 8x clock multiplier fits well with the speeds that the PC6400 memory can be overclocked to as well as the motherboards. I can vouch for the DS3 rev2 being an excellent motherboard I have not yet reached the limits of this board yet.

6300 is good, but you might hit a FSB (motherboard) or ram limit before your CPU maxes out.
6600 is also good, but probably not worth the extra money.

so the 6400 is the sweet spot. (as everyone else said!)

easy to overclock to 3.2Ghz (usually)
great price / performance

you'll be able to upgrade to a quadcore which will theoretically double your performance down the road.
