Currently I have a 4 Ti4600 in my computer which serves me well for all my current purposes, but I believe I'll begin to have some problems with games like Halflife 2 and Doom 3 (both of which I plan to get). This summer, after the release of the 6800 Series, I have been planning on upgrading my video card. However, after reading the benchmarks on the 6800 Ultra, I realize that I it wouldn;t even be an option for me to even use that card because I have no free PCI slots in my computer that I could free up for it to have enough space. Originally, I had been looking at the 5950 Ultra since it would have a significant drop in price after the new generation came out, but I now realize that most (if not all) of those require a vacant PCI slot also. This brings me to my two questions: 1) Is the 6800 Regular (or Non-Ultra) going to be a 1-slot card; and 2) If so, is it going to provide the best performance out of any nVidia 1-slots on the market? (I have this thing against ATI right now which is why I'm asking solely about nVidia cards.) Thanks.
 
welcome to [H] and get an ATI 9800XT (i know you have "something" against them) it performs better than your available Nvidia cards and you know it.

and you say most 5950's require 2 slots but not all of them do, so look harder if you really cant get an ATI(why the hell not?)
EDIT: i think the Gainward one is a one slotter, Asus might be one too

we dont know if the 6800NU will be a one slotter yet, no reviews/pics
 
you could always come up w/ your own cooling solution that takes up 1 slot for the card.
 
Well, to go into detail about my dislike towards ATI, in the past year, I have had 3 different cards (ranging from a 7200 All-In-Wonder to a 9600 Pro) that when I tried to update the drivers gave me way more work than I wanted to get the cards up and running with a resolution better than 640x480. I don't think it was anything I did since I've successfully updated ATI drivers in the past and I followed the exact same steps (and the instructions that ATI provides), but it's entirely possible. The chance of the same thing happening with a nVidia card I figure is about the same, but my lack of problems with them makes me tend to lean more towards wanting one of those over an ATI. They're both great companies and cards as far as I'm concerned, but at least for this upgrade, I plan on sticking with nVidia so that if the problems I had were a result of something wrong in the update software, ATI will have a little more time to get it fixed.

Thanks for the info on the NU, I wasn't sure if there was no info or if the Ultra was just overshadowing it. And thanks for the welcome, also.

chances are that you will see 1 slot solutions for the 6800 ultra aswell because it seems to run cooler than the 5950 did.
 
strange, my old 7000PCI i used to use ran fine on everything up to cat 4.0's

yea i agree with merlin, just wait a bit for this card to surface in stores and let the OEM manufacturers have their way with it
 
yea, I'd say that probably ASUS, chaintech, leadtech... and a few others will come up with single slot solutions for the 6800 ultra. I don't know if it actually runs cooler, what with WAY more power draw and a HUGE transistor count. I think that the cooling solution they came up wit hit just more intuitive then their last.

you can count out asus. from their concept picture, you see it already being 2 slot.
 
Do you have a small form factor PC or something? I can't imagine what the hell would take all your PCI slots to make this a big deal.

Getting a 9800XT at this point just isnt' a good idea. They are still close to $500 bux and if you wait a month you can get a 6800U for that. Makes sense to wait.

Sounds like driver conflict, what card did you have before putting the atis in your box. NVIDIA and ATI drivers have a natural dislike for each other and cause conflicts like yours when not changing vid cards....

Now that i think about it, maybe it could be a resource problem, what brand & model is your motherboard?

I have a Dell 8200 (haven't graduated to building my own comps yet, much less 2 summers ago when I bought this) with, like I said, a total of 5 slots (1 AGP/4 PCI). My 4 PCI cards are my USB 2.0/Firewire Combo card, Sound card, Wireless network card, and my Ethernet card (no on board ethernet). It would seem like I could get rid of one of the two networking cards, but the problem is that there is a known glitch between my modem and router which makes it impossible to get a connection after being powered off (like after a power outage) without first being connected to a PC and establishing a connection that way. The ethernet cable I use is only about 6' long so it doesn;t reach my router. Yeah, I know the simple solution is to take out the Wireless network card and just get a longer cable, and as a last resort, I wouldn't have any problems doing that. I believe my case is a mid-tower (looks about the same as my older Dell, but that one had 6 or 7 PCI slots).

And I have no clue on any of the motherboards in those comps.

Even in ATI to ATI change you could have driver problems... The rule of the thumb is to uninstall the old drivers, reboot in safe mode, make a run of driver cleaner, reboot in normal mode, install the drivers.... (took it from driver cleaner readmen...)
 
well here's a question:
whats in the PC slot under your vid card?

if its ethernet, get a usb adapter :)

But now that I've seen the pics of Asus' single slot Ultra, I'll probably just pick that one up (as long as its not too outrageous). Now to start researching power supplies.... :rolleyes:
 
Dell swaps around a couple of wires on the mainboard and PSU so that if you swap in a normal ATX mobo or PSU it doesn't work at best, fries the PC in worst case scenario.

I've got to research that myself, I've got a dead Dell here I've got to fix...
