My PC is older than sin (going on 5 years now), but I don't have the cash to replace the whole thing right now. It's a Celeron 700ish (633 overclocked a bit), 384meg RAM, and a Radeon 7200 video card.

Now, I can get a very sweet deal on a new ATI card through work, so I'm thinking of upgrading to a video card that can actually play this year's games. However, my ASUS mobo is AGP 2x, no PCI-E for me. If all goes well, I will be rebuilding or massively upgrading my system sometime mid-next-year-ish.

So I'm wondering if it's worth my while to buy an AGP card now (eg. a 9800) and then pop it into the new system next year, or if an AGP mobo is going to be completely outdated and/or really hard to find by then. In that case, I guess I'd suck it up and hold off hardware purchases until I can rebuild the whole system properly.
 
as far as I know the 9800 only supports 4x and 8x slots. Your best bet would be to look into something like a GF4 Ti series card as I am pretty sure they will work with a 2x slot.
 
you can look around http://pricewatch.com for video cards. you can get a decent one for $70-100. but if your going to upgrade in a few months, wait, because the techology made today, will be much cheaper then. video cards and hard drives have dropped in price in the last 2 months.
