Ok......I have an older Abit KT-7 motherboard with an old Duron processor that is failing. Since it is a socket A mobo I am looking to buy a new cpu to replace the Duron. Officially it only supports 200 Mhz (100 Mhz fsb) Durons and Athlons.

The FSB can be varied from 100 to 150, the cpu voltage can go from 1.00 to 1.85 volts, the multiplier can be changed from 5 to 12.5 on an unlocked cpu.

Is there any reason I can't stick an Athlon XP or newer Duron cpu in this board? It can certainly be adjusted to use the 266Mhz (133 fsb) cpus and the voltage can be adjusted to the newer ones too. Am I limited to the 12.5 multipier or will the board use whatever the cpu default is?

I realize I may have to replace the PC-100 sdram with something faster....

Processors just don't "start to fail". Its always some other component taking the processor down with it. Replacing the processor will likely NOT fix your problems.

Upon researching your motherboard, my findings are as follows:

Your board has the KT133 chipset, which ONLY supports 100FSB processors. Your board has explicit support for upto the 1400mhz Athlon ("B" model aka 100fsb). You will not be able to run the board reliably beyond about 110 FSB, as the original EV6 (the sysbus the athlon uses) system bus could not handle higher frequencies until a while after that chipset was released, which required a bit of reworking around the entire system.

Another thing that sucks for you: I don't know of a single supplier still selling 100fsb Athlons or Durons, as they exited production in '01 for the Athlons and '02 for the Durons, thus the FS/FT forums are your only hope to find a replacement.

Bottomline, my advice, have an experienced tech check out your rig and determine the real cause of your misery, as it will be well worth your $50 or whateverit may cost to save you the trouble of buying part after part, on a wildgoose fixit type chase.

I've had the cpu overclocked at the maximum voltage for a few years......I've had to clock it down about 50 mhz a week for a while now.....which is why I think that is what is dieing.

As cheap as cpu's are these days I still might be ahead by getting a 1.6 to 2 ghz cpu and running it at 100 mhz.......

you are right......I forgot this chipset didn't run much above 110 mhz.....
