I currently have a 7950GT paired with an Opteron 180 OC'd to just a hair under 2.8ghz. I want to donate that card to my girlfriend and in the meantime upgrade to a DX10 card. I want to avoid a huge bottleneck if I can and upgrading my CPU is not an option at the moment.

I'm considering buying either an 8600 or 8800, GS or GT. I understand an 8600 to be on par with the 7950. I would spend the extra few bucks on an 8800GT if I knew I'd see some performance gains. If not I'd just make a lateral "upgrade" and get the 8600XX and save the dough. Thoughts?
 
def. get the 8800gt. i upgraded from a 7950gt sli setup to a single 8800gt and got pretty massive frame rate boosts, sometimes 100% or more performance improvement depending on the game. an 8600gts would be a downgrade from a 7950gt for the most part, unless you love to play oblivion.

the asus 8800gt is practically a steal at the egg for only $130 after 30 m-i-r.

with your cpu, there will be some bottlenecking, but not alot to where you shouldn't see some pretty good gains. now with a gtx 280, that might be a problem...
 
Read some reviews on that card and I'm not too thrilled with what I hear about the noise and the size of it, as well as the integrated temperature setting. Hmmm.

As a matter of fact, I was looking at this but am not quite sure I want to drop that kind of dough. Was hoping to keep it closer to $100 than $200. On the other hand, I'd rather go with a BFG than an Asus.

I just wonder how much of that extra juice will be limited by my CPU. Wish there was a way I can see some [H]ard numbers.

I notice we have similar OC's - have you ever used a lesser GPU with that OC or is that your original build? I just wonder if you may have some sort of reference to base your opinion on.
 
plus 1 for the 8800 gt.

There was one on best buy for 150$ with no rebates. don't know if it's still there though.
