i have a cheap 17" Logisys CRT right now..

i've considered getting a vx922 or 940b for gaming...

but i've been wondering, should i wait for an HDCP compatible monitor or are they going to be so astronomical in price that there will be no use?

Depends...
1) Are you going to get HD-DVD or Blue-Ray as soon as they come out?
2) Are you big into home entertainment?
3) Is HDCP going to be used 100% certainly?

If you wait like say 2 years after HD DVD or Blu-Ray drives come out, then you can upgrade your monitor then...
If you KNOW you are going to buy those drives as soon as they come out, you may want HDCP...but who knows

Honestly if you are using a CRT you deserve to upgrade to an LCD ASAP for the health of your eyes. Once you get the LCD, I swear you'll say: "WHY did I wait to so long to get this?!?!?"

Get the LCD now and enjoy!

Well hdcp monitors are starting to come out. It really doesn't seem to add cost to them. Pretty much as of right now nothing needs it. In a few years though you may need it for video playback. It is a toss up. I personaly would say go for an lcd now and if you need hdcp in 2 or 3 years worry about replacing the lcd then.

then why do you need/want a HDCP compliant monitor if you don't watch movies on it

i thought i'd need one to make the most out of vista?
You do need one if you planning on watching movies on Vista taht require HDCP and no cracks come out
or at least that's my understanding of it..please correct me if i am wrong

ooh.. so the only thing HD about vista is the ability to watch HD movies?
I believe so..
Vista does not require people to have HDCP monitors just so they can look at the fancy AeroGlass GUI...

I just bought a samsung 930B and have been totally blown away by the quality of the picture for anything other than gaming. If you intend to watch HD I would go out of my way to get an HDCP monitor, but moving to lcd is really worthwhile UNLESS most of your time is spent gaming. If you game more than anything else, stick to crt.

Youve got to be kidding me right?

stick with a crt then. people will tell you endlessly here that "oh, this or that particular lcd doesnt blur" and its a bunch of crap. If you are sensitive to blur, you WILL see it on an lcd. If you primarily game on your system, get a crt that does a nice res at a great refresh.

i don't know how sensitive i am to blur/ghosting, but i know a friend of mine has an lcd that i can't stand to game on. it doesn't bother him at all, but i can't even play without getting sick...

i hear people talking about how it's very difficult to find a good CRT these days that isn't used.. do you have any suggestions?

and i don't know.. there's just something about buying a new crt that makes me feel like i'm not really getting anything new at all, even if i am upgrading from a cheap 17" Logisys.. it's just not as "high-tech" looking/feeling as an LCD..

and when i go to college it will probably be hard to fit a huge crt in my room, which is another thing that i've been trying to keep in perspective....

if you are going to college maybe you should just /end gaming for the time being and concentrate on your classes and getting laid. :p
Quake 1 sure didnt help my college career any

You could ask to test the monitor before you purchase to see if it fits well. Or you can try different LCD's that your friends already have and see which one is best and see if it fits your needs before you buy. I find that initially its a bit blurry but even with my old 25ms 193t samsung I got used to it and can play any game without seeing the blurs anymore. Although on some movies/dvd's it does get a bit blurry. Try before you buy is the key to picking a good LCD that fits you.

I personnaly cant tell the difference in most lcd's as far as refresh rates. I bought the cheapest 19 in I could find about a year ago and have been very happy with it. I grew up with very high end crt's as a kid ( my dad was a graphic artist) so I do have a bit of a trained eye for it.

I have a PolyView V293. It's great. In fact I'm about to buy a second one. Been lusting to get a dual montor set up going.
