I'm currently running an e4300 at 2.92 with an 8800GT and 2 gigs of DDR2 800 RAM. I have a Gigabyte P35-DS3R rev 1.0. I'm still running XP but will be installing Win7 in a couple weeks, and I want to make some cost-effective upgrades. I game at 1680x1050 but will likely be moving to 1900x1200 in the near future.
I'm going to be getting 4gb (2x2gb) of DDR2 1066 RAM (possibly 8gb - see below). I'm thinking that my e4300 speed is limited by my current RAM and hope to get up around 3.5ghz once I install the faster sticks. I have been considering getting an e8400 but after doing some research I don't think that it will make a big difference, and if I spend another ~135 for an e8400 I think I've crossed the line and would be better off spending my money on an i5 system, which I don't want to do. That leaves me with two questions:
1. Do you think that getting an additional 4gb of RAM (for a total of 8gb) would make any appreciable difference in gaming performance?
2. Do you think that an e4300 at 3.5ghz will bottleneck a 5850 at 1900x1200? I know that my GPU is getting old and am looking to upgrade within the next 2-3 months.
Thanks for your input.
