I currently have an MSI GeForce FX 5900 Ultra, 256MB. I am looking to upgrade, but I am not sure what kind of performance boost I can expect, so I am not sure how much money I want to spend on it. Obviously, money no object, I'd go for a pair of GeForce 6800 Ultras, and all which that entails. More realistically, I have my eye on the BFG GeForce 6800 GT OC AGP. Even more realistically, the 6600GT AGP. However, I have been unable to get an idea of what kind of performance boost I can expect going from 5900U to 6600GT, so I am not sure if it would really end up being any benefit to me, new features notwithstanding.

Does anyone have any tips or information or similar experiences that they wish to share?

Thanks.

id go with the 6800GT from BFG
www.chumbo.com has it for msrp as does Bestbuy
the 6600GT is faster but the the huge leap the 6800GT would be you could also look in to a 6800nu for a bit more then the 6600GT

oh if you go for the 6800nu you can send in any vid card for a 40 buck back or 60 back if you send a BFG card to them so 260 for a 6800nu isnt bad

not in stock but nice bundle if you think your PSU is a bit weak

A 6600 would be a bit of a boost but, considering that, when you got the 5900U, you were willing to pay for 'top of the line' performance, it'd be kinda silly to upgrade it without getting something similarly high-end.

In truth, I got a pretty good price on the 5900 Ultra. It only ran me $200. I don't recall exactly when I bought it, but I have had it for a while.

i upgraded from 5950Ultra to 6600GT and its made a hell of a difference :) plus if you buy a board that is SLI capable you can buy an extra card whenever you need to, to get even faster performance.

what I suggest is to first try and have a go and mod that 5900U to a 5950U :) then if it is a no go...upgrade to nothing less than a 6800NU..a 6600gt would be good too..but the gap isn't al that big

Substitute 6800NU for 6800GT, and my thoughts exactly! There are a few benchies where the higher frequencies of the 6600 let it catch up to the 6800.

6800GT will easyily double the preformence of a 9800XT....which smokes the NV3x series, thats what i suggest but there strong evidence Ati has a card running 2-3 times fast as the X850XTPE underwraps the MS is using engineering samples for xbox2 dev kits, might wait for that and price drops
