Upgrade problem - crashing to desktop....

I am relating this second hand (not my machine) so it may not be 100% accurate.
Existing system is a Pentium 2 Ghz machine (Dell?)

Thursday Oct 7
Installed WinXP SP2

Friday Oct 8
Upgraded Rambus memmory from (2) 128's to (2) 256's.
Upgraded video card to a 9800 Pro
Installed bundled ATI drivers (Not sure what version of Cats)

Saturday Oct 9
Ran BF1942 and game ran great

Sunday Oct 10
Installed Doom 3, game installs and launches
Loads level to 100% - crashes to Desktop

Tries to run CastleWolfenstein
Loads level 100% system locks, has to cut power to pc from outlet to reset.

Tries to Run Bf1942
Loads level to 100% crash to desktop?


Any guesses to what the problem is. So far I have suggested to reinstall DX9, download and install latest ATI cats. Anything else?
