Upgrade Plans

Hey all,

Well my PC died a few weeks ago and my rents decided to give it a small upgrade before i pop back to uni. I would of liked to stick in a new mobo and processor in it but seeing as they're paying for it i think i might just upgrade later.

I used to have a 1700+Tb overclocked to 2.0ghz, 512 DDR 2700, 80gb WD 9800 pro etc.

Im having it upgraded to a:

3200+ barton, 1gb DDR 3200, 200gb SATA drive DVD WR etc. ( same graphics card)

Of course i would of liked to go 64 but unfortunatly i cant right now.

I may upgrade again for my birthday in May, i would like o get a nforce 4 ultra board by then, 64 bit amd and a PCI-E graphics card. Do you think my PC would hold out until then? and how long until we start seeing 64bit-only games and when PCI-E becomes mainstream.

if i upgrade now, i doubt i could afford a 939 mobo with PCI-E AND a new PCI-E graphics card. So What im thinking is if i upgrade now to a 939board with AGP, i'l probably have to upgrade it again when no decent AGP cards will come out.

So in the long run perhaps im better with the barton. seeing as i can transfer my Ram, DVDWR, HDD's etc. And later i can get a PCI-E 939 board with a PCI-E graphics card, plus the nForce 4 ultra will have second gen SATA support smilie

and how long until we start seeing 64bit-only games

Currently there isn't a widely available widely used 64 bit operating system so I wouldn't worry about that for quite a while. Longhorn will be the first widely used 64 bit consumer OS and if I'm not mistaken it isn't expected to ship until sometime in 2006.

On a practical standpoint, do you really NEED a new 200GB SATA HD and a DVD RW or are they just cool things you want. If you don't need them then maybe you could use the money to invest in a newer vid card or a better PSU (I'm not sure what kind of PSU you have but if it is something cheap, don't overlook it as it can cause you alot of pain down the road). Also, assuming you are comfortable and familiar with overclocking, why not get something like a mobile athlon 2600+? You would save money and from what I understand they can run at 3200+ speeds with no problem at stock voltages with the stock cooler.

Also, have you figured out exactly why your old comp "died"? If a component failed and you aren't sure which one it was, you don't want to reuse that component in you new machine, right?

Just some thoughts, one thing for sure though, whatever you decide, do a crap load of reasearch to make sure everything is going to play together nicely. I can't stress that partenough, read everything you can find on the components you decide on.

Well i had no idea why my comp died so my dad gave it to one of his mates so he can transplant parts and whatnot. He said he reseated the RAM and it worked.... but i did that probably about 10times before i came back from uni....

My dad said to him to upgrade the components, I wanted to do it myself but my dad doesn't trust me considering what recently happened to my computer, so hes speced up that list.

Bit of a drag i know but considering im not paying for any of it I cant complain.

are you sure AMD64 isn't in your budget? The low-end 64's cost as much as a new socket A setup, almost, and will give you great performance.

like the other poster said, do you really NEED a 200GB SATA drive/DVD writer or are you going to get more use out of a faster computer?
