Upgrade path?

You'll have a longer upgrade path with AM2 over socket T since AM2 is basically brand new and Socket T/LGA775 isn't.
But...
Any Core 2 Duo chip will beat the pants of just about any AMD X2 proc, if properly overclocked. Also, 775 should be around long enough to support quad-core. Anything beyond that you're going to need a crystal ball for anyways.
Considering the fact that you already have a running dual core system though, I don't see any point in buying something else right now. Real-world performance differences will be marginal. If you were getting ready to build, I'd say go Intel. But you're not. Your system will be fine for some time. At least long enough for quad-cores to come out, Vista to be patched (along with supporting 64-bit drivers) and DX10 to mature a bit.
I'd wait til then to do a new build unless you have nothing better to spend your money on.

There will be another chipset before you can get future CPU's to work on a intel. Wait until K8L. Your upgrade isn't worth it now. You'll just end up spending money to upgrade again. You avoid that with AM2. If you don't like changeing mobos for a better cpu upgrade every 6 months then go AM2. It will support new cpus for 3 years. It doesn't have chipset issues because the memory controler is in the cpu.
You oviously arnt going to see any difference really at all since your hardware is really good already unless you think a 10fps is really a gane worth the $1000 your going to need for this upgrade just for a game and the net. Thats all dependent on your GPU and connection. The CPU isn't stressed much at all in a game since your GPU is so good.
