Upgrade Path from Dual E5-2670

Currently have a dual E5-2670 setup on an SM motherboard.

Getting a bit of an upgrade itch. I'm debating if its worth going to thread ripper or just scooping up a pair of E5-2667 V2s or E5-2697 V2s.

Dual E5-2696 seems to match on multi threaded loads, Dual E5-2667 seems to be similar on single thread and fall slightly short on multi thread.

Basically its going to cost me about $450 to upgrade to the Xeon and over $2000 for the Thread Ripper. The used Xeon seems like the way to go given my existing hardware.

Thoughts? Yeah, my Atari 400 will kick your rig's ass any day of the week. I'm talking about pure 6502 power, 1.8 MHz of "Git 'r Done" brutality.
 
Depends. How much money do you have? Not as much as you'd like? Get that Xeon V2 upgrade because it won't cost you a new motherboard and AIO (or custom) water cooler and RAM. For rendering and other professional work 24C/48T of Xeon V2s will be close to or even significantly better than the 16C/32T Threadripper (depending on the work, optimization, etc.).

When you also game with your PC, two E5-2667 v2 would be the fastest and most cost-effective solution. Oh man, these CPUs got so cheap... even deciding between E5-2667 v2 and E5-2696 v2 is difficult, because they cost the same on Ebay. For games, the singlethread performance of the E5-2667 v2 is way higher. But if you use good multithreaded programs, the E5-2696 v2 would be way faster.
 
E5-2667 v2 are great a combination between single thread speed and multiple cores. 3.5-3.6ghz all core turbo, 4.0 single core. The answer lies in your workload. If you game, go 2667 v2, if you can scale to the extra cores, and are ok with a lower turbo, the e5-2696 V2 would be good.
 
What do you use the system for? Would you benefit from more cores or faster clock? Either way I would go the Xeon route in this case, for sure.
