Upgrade Path from a 5770

I'm trying to upgrade my video card every 12-18 months with a budget around $150. Having upgraded to the 5770 in January of 2011 (from an 8800gt) for $100, I believe it's time to move on.

First, for $150 can a worthwhile upgrade be had? What are your expectations in the next few months, and what would you see as the performance card in the $180-$200 price range to keep an eye on in case of a sale?

I may sell the 5770 to supplement the $150.

Basically, look for a 6870 for around $150 after rebate. At $200 you could maybe keep an eye out for a 6950 1gb, but they are getting harder to find (newegg has no 1gb models in stock and only one 2gb model in stock). In the coming months we will see the 7800 series cards launch, but those are expected to be in the $250-$300 range.

The 7770 has been released recently but the 6870 performs better for cheaper.

You could also just get another 5770- 2x5770 will give you better performance than 1x6870. If the board is the one in your sig, it should support it at 8x.

Another vote for a 5770 crossfire. If thats out of the question, 6870s are really good value right now and a pretty bug upgrade over your 5770.

Eh, I'd check out benchmarks for 2x5770. Single cards are usually less of a headache than CF, if that influences your decision at all.

Thank you all for the suggestions. I do prefer a single-card solution over CF to avoid as many problems as possible, in addition to the reduced power consumption vs dual cards. I'll be taking a close look at 6870's, and at first glance have my eye on an XFX model on newegg for $145 after MIR.

Thanks again, you guys are a help to me when I don't have time to follow hardware as closely as I'd like to.

I'd sell the 5770 you have here in the FS/FT forum for $50-60 and put it with your $150. You could maybe get a used 1gb 6950 for $200 or less. That would be a good upgrade for you.
