Hey all, been out of the game a while, and getting some advice on what upgrade path I should take on a very limited budget.

Current system, E8500 @ 3.8 , 6gb ddr3 1600, P5Q3, 4850 OC'd as far as it will go.

I'm doing game reviewing and a lot of video editing now, first thing to upgrade is my vid card as it will expand with me, getting a 7950 asap, but I'm stumbling on processor and mobo.

As I see it I have 3 choices, go Z77 and a 3770k, Pick up a nice used X58 and older i7, or wait for Haswell.

The 3770k route would be most powerful, but also most expensive, so I'm leaning tword the X58 route, but I'm unsure on what kind of performance bump I would see over my current setup.

Thoughts?

If you have a Microcenter nearby you can get a 3770K for $229. I don't know how long that deal will alst with Haswell right around the corner so it's a tough call whether you should wait or not.

For video editing though I would go for the i7.

Damn, thats a good deal, unfortunately closest one is in Atlanta. ... I'm in Tampa haha.
 
I think I'm going to wait myself, but that is a good deal and I'm close enough to a micro center it might be worth the drive and gas.

no much for the OP 6 hours travel +/- i think..

also to the OP im agreed with the 3770k for the way to go... you have not any friend with a microcenter near? so he can buy and send you.. :) I do that for couple of friends..
 
Given how close Haswell is, I'd hold off till it launches just in case 3770ks go on sale then.
 
Well, I think I just made up my mind quite suddenly haha. Bought an MSI Big Bang, i7 965, and 12gb of ddr3 on here for less than the 3770 on newegg :)

Not as tasty as a 3770, but between me buying a new mobo and more ram to go in it, this route was 1/3rd the price, and should more than hold me over for another year at least
 
That platform should be good for more than a few years. If you game, just remember what hardware is actually needed to run the software (game). If you need to upgrade in one year, it may not be necessary fyi. :p
 
Oh, fun/weird side note, I just sold my old P3 slot mount proc and mobo to help fund an i7 EE lmfao.

thats a excelent deal, and HUGE amount of performance increase over your E8500.. good luck, enjoy it..
 
Ha, that's a nice upgrade for the money. Those were nice fast, if hot, CPUs.

I used to have a E8500 and they were great for the time. The setup you have now is fantastic. the performance output should run circles around the old setup.

I'm hoping so, seller is including a massive HSF with it, but I ordered an adapter for my waterblock as well, gonna try that 130w beast on my aging loop first haha. Trying to score a deal on a used DDC pump now :)

I really love my E8500, was a massive jump over my P4HT 3.4 Prescott, but things evolved so fast after the C2D, I just couldn't stomach dropping rebuild money every 4-6 months heh, but it seems the technology is finally slowing, and I think will slow much further with Haswell, so after playing with this for a year (maybe 2) Haswell will have matured and evolved enough to warrant a new upgrade.

In the meantime I can get my loop upgraded (even tho with Haswell I wont need it haha)
