Upgrade or wait?

Hello everyone,

I am thinking of getting a new gaming rig, the last one i got was in 2007 and since then i only upgraded my gfx card..

what I have at the moment:

Q6600 @3.1
6970 Gfx card
4 gb DDR2

Now i dont know when intel will slash prices on their chips again, thats why i am thinking of waiting, but if i would to get a new pc i think i would go with either 2600k or the new 2700k

So, since i didnt upgrade my pc in quite a while, do you think intel will be releasing new CPUs soon and thus lowering the price of the old ones or it will take a while till that happens again ?

Wait until you can't wait anymore. When your PC no longer performs to your liking, that's when you should upgrade.

Intel tends to replace models at certain pricepoints rather than lowering prices. For example, the i7 920 didn't drop in price, it was simply replaced with the i7 930.

If you live near a MC, then get your CPU there. Otherwise, wait for combo deals from Newegg.
 
That's a lot of GPU muscle so if you're getting good frame rates now with your Q6600 and are on the fence about waiting, then wait. Ivy Bridge will be out in 6 months and you can see how prices shake up. You could certainly upgrade to a nice i5-2500K rig now and it'll give you great performance but if you're not a chronic upgrader like me who upgrades for fun and not for need, then just hang on to an already capable system.
 
Can you drop a Q9550 in your motherboard? If so, that's a worthwhile upgrade over a Q6600 - especially if you overclock it. I haven't priced any used ones lately, but gotta be cheaper than a 2500K (don't need the 2600K for gaming), new MB, and new RAM - and definitely in the same ballpark for gaming performance.
 
I dont think so. I think the Q6600 is the top dog you can put in that socket.

It's a motherboard issue, not a socket issue. Both the Q6600 and the Q9550 are Socket 775 - but not all motherboards support the newer chips.
 
Although OCing may not help that much in games, but maybe you can clock your Q6600 higher?

Nah.. cant OC the CPU anymore than 3.1, trust me i tried :).. gets too hot or unstable
 
what board do you have? if you want to try OC'ing more, we can help. C2D's were easy OC'ers. ;)
 
The board is P5Q-Pro from Asus..
the CPU has a B3 stepping, so its not a great overclocker to begin with :)
 
Do you know the feeling when everyone tells you one thing, your brain tells you the same thing.. but you still CANT resist and want to buy new PC stuff ? :) Well.. i could not resist and this is what i ordered :)

I wouldve gone with a board that had a better warranty, but thats just me. Since you already bought your parts, all I can say now is gl and have fun with the build!
