hello all

My videocard just died on my current comp so i ordered a new 9800 gtx and a new PSU to support it.

My question is should i continue to use my current cpu/mobo or upgrade? My computer usage is mostly World of Warcraft, Age of Conan,Unreal Tournament 3,and the new Stalker game coming out. I have dell 20" widescreen and a 19" using dual monitors. I tend to watch movies while playing mmos.

If was to upgrade i am considering:

q6600 or 9450
mobo not certain
ram not certain
vista home premium

normally I'd say to stick with the amd chip for now, seeing as gaming at that rez is gpu limited, but you're on the 939 dual... You can gain a bit of performance with a mobo that has a dedicated pcie16 slot (instead of the 4x you currently have), but I urge you to try it out with your current setup anyway. I'm betting that the performance you get will be just fine, and you might be able to save a bit of money by not upgrading.

Assuming that you'll (eventually) upgrade, how much are you willing to spend (including shipping/taxes) on those upgrades? And which motherboard features do you want?

I'm not sure how well a PCI Express 2.0 card is going to run on a PCI Express (1.1) x4 slot. I saw a thread here referencing the trouble that someone had with the 9800GTX in a PCIe x4 slot. (I believe it was in the SFF forum... but I forgot the name of the thread....)

If you can afford it, I second the recommendation for a system upgrade.

I agree, the limited slot bandwidth may hinder performance on such a high-bandwidth nvidia card. Try it out, and if you don't like it, upgrade. If you choose to upgrade, answer tiraides questions. ;)

You wouldnt do wrong with a Q6600 CPU and an intel P35 motherboard both of which are pretty cheap these days, as for RAM either go with corsair, A-DATA or G-skill all of which are quality brands, as for the motherboard choice depending on your budget either go with Abit or Asus Abit mobo_iP35 Pro Asus mobo_ P5K Premium i Know others could of more but these are the only ones i can recall at this time;)

I should also note that my desktops are:
1680 by 1050 primary
1280 by 1024 secondary

400 to 600 I guess for price range. as far as motherboard features I don't really require anything out of the norm. I have single hard drive and only 1 device plugged in (mp3 player). I would consider over clocking. (never tried it)

What this guy said won't run you nearly 600:

I would like to go the cheapest route possible. I see everyone recommending the Q6600. The motherboard I do not know what to look for. I only require basic features as I said above. Also a coworker suggested I move to vista and add 4gigs ram to the motherboard. Suggestions please.

Thanks

$90 - Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3L LGA 775 Intel P35
$63 - A-DATA 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2-800 ADQVE1B16K (Promo: EMCAFAJAG)

I had an AMD 4000 x2 @ 2.74ghz and it bottlenecked my 8800GT at stock speeds.

I now have an e2180 @ 3.1ghz and It doesn't give me any troubles with my overclocked 8800.

And yes, I played @ 1680 x 1050 and I still got a bottleneck out of it.
