looking to upgrade my msi nvidia gtx 670 to teh new amd r9 280x sapphire bad boy in your opinions is it worth it?

Troll post of the year?

You cant be serious starting this thread. You have been here 5 years and you dont know how to read just 1 sticky at the top of the AMD subsection to see that a 280x will stomp on a GTX670?

280x > 7970 > (slightly) 680 > 7950 > 670.

Come on man. To boot, how can we tell if its worth it for you? You gave no indication of what games you play, your resolution, your love for eye candy, or anything really.

Gtx670 is about 10% slower at 1920x1080. The 280 doesn't "stomp" it. I would wait and look at the 290 or 290x benchmarks and consider that if it's as good as AMD is making it out to be.

Keep in mind that we don't know what games you are playing, what resolution you play at, or the rest of your hardware. My post is assuming you have at least a 1080 monitor and something as or more powerful than a Sandy bridge CPU.

Hmmm..... Well a 7970ghz is about 20% faster than a GTX670. The 280x is faster than a 7970ghz obviously due to the higher clock. Hes looking at about 20-30% more performance depending upon the title. Thats a pretty good jump.

What reviews are you looking at? Its nowhere near 30% faster.
In it's BEST cases it is about 20% faster. Some games the 670 even beats the 280x. On average (more than average actually..) the 280x is only about 10% faster in about every review, including here at hardocp.

I guess the GTX680 is unneeded as it will beat out a 7970ghz and a 280x. Must be false benchmarks everywhere of how the 7970 can beat out a GTX680 and that a GTX680 loses to a GTX670.

My apologies.

What we found was that the GeForce GTX 680 was able to keep up with the Radeon HD 7970 at 2560x1600 quite well. In every game we tested the highest playable setting we found with the GeForce GTX 680 was at 2560x1600. We were able to match the gameplay settings and experience exactly with a Radeon HD 7970 at 2560x1600. In fact, we were surprised to find that the GTX 680 not only matched the gameplay experience of the Radeon HD 7970 at 2560x1600, but in most cases the framerates were a bit faster with the GTX 680.

I know you are going to come back and say "but LLoose!! but LLoose!! Its not the GHZ edition!!"

So heres another link.

AMD's claim that this is the "World's Fastest and Most Versatile GPU" is somewhat of a stretch. In the games we tested we were only seeing a performance increase that we expect to see from any overclocked Radeon HD 7970. AMD also states that the AMD Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition is "Retaking the Performance Crown," but with the highest stable overclock the performance was not better than an overclocked NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680 as we showed here and here.

And to clear things up, don't get me wrong.. the 280x is a very nice card. I am happy that AMD gave it a nice overlock and a performance increase over the 7970 instead of sticking on a new sticker on it and calling it new. My arguement is that the the actual increase in performance from a gtx 670 is not worth the cost of upgrade in my opinion. I could be wrong though, the OP could shit himself with joy from seeing 5-10fps more. Since he hasn't replied, I'll assume hes a smart consumer and realizes that a gtx 670 isnt that far behind a 280x.

Gentlemen, allow me.

GTX670 vs 7970GHZ Ed, which is basically a 280x.

The 670 gets stomped in some, fights back well in others. Note the BF3 scores.

Anandtech review.
Anandtech, toms, and hexus are all pretty inconsistant with their reviews. If you want to trust them, by all means go for it. I'll stick to hardocp's methods because they have been as close to what I have experienced when I purchased hardware and use a broader scope than just giving some kind of chart that just says "fps". Those reviews remind me too much of when you hear someone say "I can MAX out X game with FULL ULTRA settings", then you look at their settings and sure the slider is at "ultra", but then you notice they are playing at 720p with no AA etc.

Really? Anandtech is a very, very esteemed member of the review website cadre..and have been in that position for a decade+.

It's just a personal preference. Theres nothing wrong with using their reviews if they work for you. The only community I really take part in is the one here though. I like their testing methods, I like the data they present, and I like the way they present it. Its organized, methotical, and closest to what I have seen with my own hardware. I'll still read Anand's reviews and articles, but for real data, I go to hardocp every time.

280x or 7970 (maybe a 770 if the price ever drops soon) should be a nice upgrade from my 6950.

I don't think you read anandtech.

I like [H] reviews very much. One thing they wouldn't do is compare cards that are using drivers that are 14 months old. Its not June 2012 anymore:

I wouldn't go from a 670 to a 280x unless there was something specific that I wanted out of the 280x, eg performance in a few specific titles at a certain resolution. I think you are absolutely right that in a lot of cases they both would provide the exact same experience. The 670s seem like the were great cards, definitely one of the best cards last year in every respect. Power consumption, temps, performance/$.

According to {H} review of the 280x, its faster or atleast equal to than the GTX770 (which is faster than a GTX680). http://www.hardocp.com/article/2013...irectcu_ii_top_video_card_review#.UmXjBBCGai8

Im really not sure where you are getting only 10% faster, I really dont. Its a good bit faster than 10% and at extremes, can be as high as 30% in some titles. Is it a good upgrade? Thats up to the buyer. He could probably sell his card EASILY for $250 and it would only be a $50 price increase to goto a 280x. It would definitely be worth it IMO.

If you could get $250 for a 670 then I would consider it yeah
