upgrade or new TV?

I was gonna upgrade but while having to wait for more NF4 boards I got to thinking I don't do nothing but play games here and there on my PC and I only run 1024x768 max detail no FSAA. I finished HL2 and there isn't really anything else coming for a while that seems to interest me. Even when it does if I just bought a 6600GT AGP or 6800OC wouldn't it run it just fine at the settings I play at?

I realized I play console games probably more than PC games and am using a older RCA 27". So I figure maybe get a new video card for my PC and maybe a 32" flatscreen. Although not a huge upgrade but still better. I got about $500-$700 to spend on whatever I want.

Should I maybe wait till later this year or maybe this time next year and upgrade or would it be well worth it now?
 
Don't do either and save the money for an HDTV. You'll be glad you did.

I have a 47" rear projection Hitachi and it is the bomb. If you have an xbox you'll double love it.
 
Here are the new models
I don't see mine listed anymore. I bought mine at Sears, right before the Super Bowl last year. The best deals on big screens are always at Super Bowl time.

I did a lot of research before buying and here is a summary... some of it is counter-intuitive.


  1. Make your decision based on the specs and brand reputation, not how the television looks in the store. There are too many variables to accurately judge HDTV picture in-store.
  2. Mitsubishi and Hitachi seemed to have the best reputation; Panasonic was one of the worst. A friend of mine who used to sell electronics advised me that Panasonics are very hit or miss and that about half of the Panasonic HDTVs that he sold would come back for repairs or replacement.
  3. The picture on my Hitachi is awesome, 1080i is like looking out a window; but the sound suffers from too much mid-range. Not a problem since I have a 5.1 surround system, but something to keep in mind.
  4. Some sets have a built in HDTV decoder and some do not. Mine does not, but I have DISH and their HD receiver will decode over the air (OTA) HDTV broadcasts.
  5. The extended warranty is very expensive. Whether you get one is up to you and your wallet. I opted not to get the extended warranty.
