I have an old computer I want to upgrade... specs:

e6850 @ stock speed
4 gb ram
msi neo2 fr
550 w power supply
250 gb 7200 rpm hd ...

Currently I have a geforce 8800 gts (320mb) and I would like to up my performance a bit. Would I gain much by getting a radeon 5850, geforce gtx 460, or a 470?

Or would I be better off building a new rig from scratch with an i7 ? I don't really want to go this option but it is possible.

I do play fps's and play at resolution of 1900x1050 when I can usually with medium settings.

thanks

you are certainly not going to get the most out of a 5850 or gtx470 cards with your cpu. if you really need something now then just grab a gtx460 since they can be found for really cheap and will be a much better match for your system.

I second the 460. Your system still has (some) life left to it before it feels too terrible to keep going. At that point, you can then upgrade after Sandy Bridge and AMD's new stuff comes out and the price war begins again. I wouldn't bother for a little longer on the whole new pc route yet. Get a 460 or 6850 :)

I agree on the GTX 460 - just make sure you get the 1 GB card if budget permits and that you have the 2 6-pin power connectors that are required.

Another vote for a 1GB 460. Also maybe consider an OC on your cpu to extend its useful lifespan and better keep up with the 460. Is your cpu cooler stock? If so maybe consider a cheap new heatsink that will give you lots of OC room.
